  • What is my project? I’m an anthropologist, sound artist, and filmmaker from Peru who has been selected to join The Arctic Circle, a highly respected and sought after residency program that brings together international artists, scientists, and innovators to explore the High Arctic and engage in the critical issues of our time.
  • Why is it important? For almost a decade, I’ve been making a strong case for the need for local voices at the center of global climate discussions and research. My work is principally set in the surroundings of the Quelccaya glacier in the region of Cuzco in Peru -the largest tropical glacier on the planet- and is inspired by anthropological methods that require doing fieldwork along with people where they live.
  • What will I do? The Arctic Circle is a unique opportunity for me to collaborate with cross-disciplinary professionals, experiment with new ideas, and create new and pioneering work that contributes to the global conversation about the ice worlds from the Arctic and the Andes. With this new project, I am interested in converting into powerful images and narratives the intricate network of relationships that articulate human and non-human worlds in two zones where climate change is materially present, and life is permeated by environmental injustice.
  • How will it make a difference? By donating to my campaign, you will not only help me join The Arctic Circle, but also support the creation of art that can inspire, educate, and challenge people to think differently about our world and our future.
  • What is the outcome? After this residency, I expect to develop a sound installation project that advances a broader anthropological/artistic exploration of the ‘scenes of extinction’ that are emerging in both the Andes and the Arctic in the context of the Anthropocene. More precisely, in this project I want to superimpose a carefully curated assemblage of amplified everyday and ambient sounds, registered with innovative recording practices, from glaciated landscapes in the Arctic and the Andes. This project aligns closely with my academic work on sound and climate and is strongly informed by critical theory and pushes beyond the disciplinary limitations of the earth sciences and environmental humanities while identifying their potential to be used differently. In this sense, it explores the possibilities for sound to engage in new material relations with the earth and its forces, and to (re)imagine new worlds yet to come in the Anthropocene.

What are the costs?

The Arctic Circle expedition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it also comes with a significant price tag. Besides the program fees, which cover the ship charter, accommodation, meals, and expedition support, I need to cover the costs of air travel to Svalbard from Peru, insurance, basic equipment, and materials. I have secured some funding from grants and sponsors, but I still need $5,000 to make this happen. That’s why I’m asking for your help. Anything extra I manage to raise will go towards sound equipment, materials and exhibition costs. If I do not reach my goal, then the money I raised will still go towards this mission.

How can you help?

Please join me on this journey and help me make this dream come true. Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference. Also, please help me get the word out about my campaign. Post it on your social media accounts, email your friends, parents, work buddies etc. Thank you for your generosity and support!
