My friend and colleague, Maja, has gone through a lot with her over 2-year battle against breast cancer. Aside from draining her body and spirit, this sickness has drained her family's resources as well. She has kept this difficulty to herself and to a small circle of friends and family but right now she is reaching out to us for support. I hope that we can all take time to know about Maja's story as narrated by her below.

Hi! I am Marineth Jervis Jaen Barquira, better known as Maja. :)

Last November 2018, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and undergone Lumpectomy (removal of the tumor). Recently, November 2020, a recurrence happened, and I had to go through a Mastectomy (removal of the breast).

My oncologist advised that I need to go through an extraordinary set of steps - because currently, I again have a tumor on my axillary lymph nodes, and I haven't gone through chemotherapy yet, due to various events that transpired within the past 4 months after my surgery.

My doctor advised that I need to have all my pre-chemotherapy labs done. All will amount to a large sum of money which I do not have now. This includes PET CT with IV Contrast, 2D Echo with doppler, various blood tests and breast ultrasound. All of which has to have result before Saturday 3/27.

3/27 will be a memorable number - as it should be the day of my first chemotherapy session. Upon completion of all above laboratories, I am scheduled to have my 1st cycle of chemotherapy. I need to undergo chemotx every 3 weeks, for a total of 4 cycles (4 session). If it weren't for COVID cases spiking again, my doctor does want it to have every 2 weeks - since the cancer that I have is really aggresive, she said. But then due to COVID, she can't risk me dying on a pandemic disease. Every chemotx session, I wil also have to pay for various blood tests - it is a requirement so the doctors would know if you can/cannot proceed with your session. Each chemotx session amounts to half of the prelabs above. After the result of the 4 cycles - she then need to ask me again to have the same initial labs. Because this is the time to assess what chemo has done to me - did it make me better, or worse? The initial labs would be a baseline. The second set of labs after 1st 4 cycles of chemotx will decide if I need to go through another surgery to remove the axillary lymph node mass now, or be in a forever cycle of chemotx (in the event that the spread went to lungs, liver or bones).

Should there be no metastasis, another 4 cycles of chemotx is required which each session amounts to more than twice the amount of the first 4 cycles.

Aside from the fact that cancer is a physical, mental and an emotional battle - believe it or not, it is also a financial battle. As much as I want to keep it all to myself, I really need all the financial help I could get right now. I want to get treated, I want to be free of these cancer cells.

My doctor told me, back when I was diagnosed at 27 years old, I only had 37% chance for a 5-year survival since I only did surgery. I am on my 2nd year now, and finally want to go to chemotherapy. however hard the battle on all fronts will be. I hope to up my 5-year survival rate to 57.9% - andI need your help.

Any amount will help my battle.

Please include me in your prayers.

Let's fight this together!

Sincerely,

Maja
