One Citizen is Being Punished for Daring to Challenge the System

Lefteris Georgiou was born years ago in the coastal city of Cyprus, Limassol.

When he was three months old, his parents threw him on the street, so ended up in government childcare systems, and grew up in foster families.

He liked football and from a young age he dreamed of wanting to be a player for a big team, but life ended up on a different path.

At 12 he found himself on the streets where he started working and at the same time going to school. The lack of emotional support and guidance drive him into troubles very often. As he matures he decided to leave it all behind and start a new life.

A life of helping others in pain. He opened his own courier company and he started a new chapter in his life. The birth of his daughter was the best moment of his life. He finally felt like he was like everyone else with a family, friends and work. Until the financial crisis hit Cyprus. Slowly he began losing his clients, fired his employees and worked alone. Until one night 16 months ago, when his life took on a whole different path. The path of helping selflessly others in need. He saw a homeless man sleeping alone and helpless on the beach.

This was a shock to Lefteris. He felt this man's loneliness, as he felt many times before in his life, as a small child who was lonely and homeless. At that moment he decided to make it his life’s mission to help all homeless. He helped this man get into a hotel and with the help of some friends he collected food and medicine for his needs.

As the governors at the time celebrated in the media that Cyprus was coming out of the EU-imposed memorandum, the homeless problem in Cyprus was growing. Lefteris saw the social injustice happening on the island, saw the social lack of infrastructure and decided to be the change he wants to see in the world. Started challenging the state system and social services to take responsibility and care for the citizens and their human rights.

He organized a small group on social networks with citizens that wanted to help, known as the Active Movement, knocked on doors to the relevant Ministries, to the Archbishop himself, to Cypriot political parties. The movement gained ground and responded to tens of calls daily, helping every person who needed a home, families who wanted food, or families that their home would be taken by the banks. The movement grew, and so did the volunteering of those involved.

The government bodies responsible for this sector denied the problem and did not want to believe that the number of vulnerable people in Cyprus. The Cypriot media, seeing that the "social services of the state are in a hurry" gave him a platform to allow him to explain the severity of the issues on TV and Radio. Lefteris knew the issues first hand, since as a child he dealt with the same issues. He voice was heard and it became a hot topic in Cyprus. Lefteris many times stated that all people deserve basic human care, and no one should be alone and helpless in the street, as he was as a child.

But Lefteris's daily "war" against the system for some people was a headache. It displayed an image that the government was trying hard to hide. Lefteris demanded that the state finds a solution for the people in need. Firmly believing that the funding was available and that we need to take care of the issue before it gets out of control. But government officials wanted to hide the problem. Exposing such issues was bad for Cyprus, for the story of "prosperity" they are promoting abroad.

He wanted was pushing for a solution for the people by contacting the appropriate ministries. In the meantime Lefteris and his team works around the clock collecting food, medicine and clothing for those in need. Until one day all the media in Cyprus, with big and imaginative headlines, wrote that there was a warrant out for his arrest.

The categories?

Trafficking and fraud against the state!

They even went on to accuse him of stealing 350,000 euros! A sick attempt to silence him and punish him for taking on responsibility.

(the case was dropped, no evidence)

He knew nothing and called the police asking them if he had a warrant out for his arrest. Police told him no, but invited him to their office to arrang

e an old fine. He went and when he got there, they offered him coffee. When he asked them what the media was writing, he said they were ridiculous. After a while, a different officer came and informed him that we were actually looking for you and simply told to him to have a chat. Then they proceeded to say "ah! nobody called you? ' his is Cyprus police. From that day, he has been in custody with a "police thriller" unfolding, trampling on his human rights. He, himself suffering from chronic heart problems, was taken to hospital and underwent heart surgery to open a closed artery.

Fortunately, everything went well for his health, but soon after, he was transferred from one city to another, in the midst of bad weather, with no food, still recovering from surgery, so eventually he returned to the hospital under police custody.

After days, the justice system ruled that they could no longer hold him because no evidence was available for any wrong doing.

They found no evidence against him but organized all of these accusations of fraud, theft and trafficking because it obviously annoyed people in the system and showcased the lack of responsibility the government exhibits for the ones in need.

After all this political fiasco, he was released and free of charges! But was arrested the next second for personal debt to the state of 5,000 euros. Of course this was the a very convenient plan to keep him in jail for as long as possible, to break him so he stops the fight for those in need.

The Lawyer of the Movement had made a request to the Public Prosecutor's Office to settle the debts, as it is done for all the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. But this, while at the beginning we were informed that it would be settled after the authorities called us and informed us that the instructions "from above" is to go to prison for debt!

Again, establishing that the whole point of this is to keep him in jail and make him stop his tries to help others (as this exposes the flaws in the existing system)

We believe detention is unfair and that the only reason it is being kept - while it could be settled under the law - is to make an examples of what can happen to any citizen who dares to fight the system.

We ask for your help to free Lefteris.

We stand by him and support him in the work he started: a work that concerns each of us.

Times are hard and power is corrupt.

We need to united and show that people together can fight, and can restore our broken humanity. We demand a better world and we will want a better world, a fair world for all. This is Lefteris' dream.

Πήγε και όταν έφτασε εκεί, τον κέρασαν καφέ! Όταν τους ρώτησε τι είναι αυτά που γράφουν τα media του είπανε ότι είναι γελοιότητες. Μετά από λίγο ήρθε ο αρμόδιος και τον ενημέρωσε ότι όντως καταζητείτε και απλά στη συζήτηση του είπε «α! μα δεν σε πήρε κανείς τηλέφωνο»;

  • I am donating because of his good efforts but I am not supporting being unlawful and not paying one's parking tickets. We are all the same under law. I hope he is not parking illegally next time.
