Free Breakfast for Kids

BACKGROUND

I sent my son to school yesterday with packed noodles as his breakfast. Later that evening, he told me that he gave his noodles to his friends, not only for today but almost every meals I prepared everyday. I told my son that is a noble act of sharing. He replied that some of his friends do not bring their own breakfast. I met the class teacher to asked about this matter. She claimed that more than half of her students are not taking breakfast. The first reason is the parents don't have enough time to prepare breakfast because the school session starts at 7.20am and they need to send their children earlier. The second reason is poverty, where some students only have money to buy food during recess.

Breakfast is crucial especially for elementary students. They need energy to start the day. Last meal they take is during dinner usually at 9pm, which is 10 hours gap of empty stomach. Without breakfast, this empty stomach period extends to 13 hours (recess time at 10am in most schools).

STRATEGY

Funds from this fundraising will be used to set a free breakfast kiosk in a primary school at Johor for a kick-start. Fifty packs of healthy breakfast like cereals, bread, fruit and milk will be packed and distributed at this kiosk everyday for students who in need with the help from his school teachers (priority to early arrival and underprivileged students). Gradually, I will increase the number of packed food and free breakfast kiosk in other neighbouring schools depending on the amount of funds received.

Estimated cost per breakfast set:

1 bowl of cereals = RM0.40
1 fruit (banana/apple) = RM0.40
1 cup of milk/tea = RM0.20

Total = RM1.00

Estimated Cost for One Kiosk

1 set of breakfast RM1.00 x 50pack = RM50/day/school

I see this issue is demanding and requires solution. I believe small initiative can gives big impact to the students. This noble act of kindness will be my social responsibility and you can be part of this cause.
