Franco’s Fundraising for Kidney Transplant

My name is Franco Dino D. Bonifacio, 34 years old, from Quezon City, Philippines. I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 secondary to Chronic Glomerulonephritis last May 2016. Two days after I was diagnosed, my dialysis immediately started. We were advised that it will be a lifetime treatment, unless I will undergo a kidney transplant so I will have a normal life again.

It was life changing and one of the most depressing moments of my life. I knew that from that day, my life will never be the same again. My condition is not just physically, mentally and emotionally draining, but also financially challenging. My parents are both retired and my siblings have their own families and I cannot just rely on them for my financial needs. I realized that I need to do something to support my needs. That is why I still go to work every after my dialysis treatment that is three times a week. I also sell assorted products to raise funds to support my financial needs. But it is just enough to support my current expenses for my dialysis treatment and medications. It is not enough to save money for my operation and future medical expenses.

After more than 3 years of being on dialysis treatment, I finally found a kidney donor. She is one of my best friends and workmate. We’ve known each other since 2010 and from then, we became close friends and call each other “Kambal”. Since the day that I was diagnosed with this disease, she helped me in so many ways. She was there to comfort me on the days that I was so down. She is also helping me in selling my products. And then last July 2019, she told me that she has decided to donate her kidney and ready to start the tests needed. We already finished her laboratory tests and she already passed as my kidney donor. As of today, we are just waiting for the schedule of the Ethics Committee and for the schedule of the operation to be set.

Our journey from the day we started her laboratory tests was like a roller coaster ride. It was really mixed emotions and there were times that I thought that maybe this is not yet the right time for me. But we finally completed all the necessary tests and requirements and I am confident that this is God’s perfect timing for me. That I will have a new kidney this coming December 2019.

But there is still one thing that I am really worried about, the financial aspect of this circumstance. We need to raise more funds to support our operation and other future medical expenses. This will include the:
- Surgery (Kidney Transplant): about PhP 1.2-1.5 million
- Follow-up check-up/tests (both for me and my donor)
- Anti-rejection medication (lifetime maintenance): about PhP 70-80k monthly initially
