Have you ever thought about how odd it is for one species to share their sofa, bed, and all of their every day life with another species?

To be a dog lover is not a special thing, a lot people share their lives with a sweet pooch.
But how did such a special and strong bond between two such distinctive creatures emerge and evolve during the history of mankind?

There is one special lady who has dedicated her life to preserving a living piece of this puzzle! Her name is Myrna Shiboleth. Myrna has taken on the task of preserving one of the most ancient dog breeds that still exists- the Israel Canaan Dog. The Canaan dog is one of very few dog breeds that are considered to be truly primitive, existing long before man created hundreds of dog breeds by selective breeding. The Canaan Dog is the dog that our ancestors shared their lives with. If you think about it, the Canaan dog is the dog from the bible. Cool, right?

Almost five years ago, Myrna was thrown out of her home in Israel after 47 years. When she moved in to Shaar Hagai in 1970, it was a ruin, and she spent a great deal of time, energy and resources in restoring it, making it into a comfortable home, and an internationally known farm for the breeding and preservation of the Israel Canaan Dog. Over the years, she was visited by many from all over the world that were interested in seeing and learning about these rare and very special dogs.

And then she was left homeless with her dogs and without any resources; she received no compensation.

When she had nowhere to go, her dear friend Isabella opened her home and heart to her and her dogs, and they moved to Italy, to share a house with her.

Italy is a wonderful country, spectacularly beautiful and full of kind people. But Myrna is not able to get a permanent residence permit there. Without residence, she has no health care and is not allowed to work. And despite all the problems involved, it is not home, her family is in Israel. She must return to Israel soon.

The return to Israel involves a great deal of expense. Things have changed a lot since she came to Italy; the laws in Israel for travel with dogs have changed, and the situation with flights has changed drastically due to the present COVID situation. Bringing the dogs home will be exceedingly expensive, but under no circumstances will she abandon her dogs – her Canaans, collies and podengos - wherever her home is, that must be their home as well.

Myrna has been just managing to get along and has no resources that she can use to pay for shipping the dogs. Friends have found a place for her and the dogs to live in Israel, but she will need all the household basic necessities, she has no furniture or housewares, and fences for the security of the dogs.

The domestication of dogs is still scientifically ”a big question”. Scientists still try to determine exactly when and where the beginning of domestication took place. In other words, how dogs became so integrated in human evolution, to the point that they are literally another family member in our lives today.

The Canaan Dog that exists today holds a concentrated and capsuled bulk of information that in fact shows us what the original dog was like when it chose to become associated with man. Not many understand how precious this information is. It can help us to shed light on many biological processes regarding psychological, emotional (and the neurobiology of those), genetics data and more. This information is a treasure not only for canine science, but also for other species research (including humans). There are very few other breeds that can provide this sort of information.

This fund has been started in the hopes of being able to collect enough to bring Myrna and her dogs home to Israel, so that she can continue her work with this fascinating breed.

If all her friends contribute even just a small amount, the goal will be achieved, and Myrna and her dogs will be able to go home.

אנשים שאוהבים כלבים אינם תופעה מיוחדת במינה, אנשים רבים נהנים מחיים משותפים עם כלב חמוד. אבל כיצד נוצר קשר מיוחד ואמיץ כל כך בין שני יצורים שונים והתפתח במהלך תולדות האנושות?

ישנה גברת אחת מיוחדת שהקדישה את חייה לשימור חלק ממשי מפסיפס זה! שמה מירנה שיבולת. מירנה לקחה על עצמה את המשימה של שימור אחד מגזעי הכלבים העתיקים ביותר שעדיין קיים – הכלב הכנעני הישראלי. הכלב הכנעני הוא אחד מגזעי כלבים מעטים ביותר שנחשבים לכלבים פרימיטיביים אמיתיים, שהיו קיימים זמן רב לפני שהאדם יצר מאוד גזעי כלבים באמצעות גידול מכוון. הכלב הכנעני הוא הכלב שהיה שותף לחייהם של אבותינו. אם נחשוב על זה, הכלב הכנעני הוא הכלב מהתנ"ך. מדהים, נכון?

לפכי כמעט חמש שנים, מירנה גורשה מביתה בישראל לאחר 47 שנים. כאשר היא הגיעה לשער הגיא בשנת 1970, המקום היה חורבה והיא השקיעה זמן, מרץ ומשאבים רבים בשיקומו, הפיכתו לבית נוח ולחווה בעלת מוניטין בינלאומי לגידול ושימור הכלב הכנעני הישראלי. במהלך השנים, ביקרו אצלה אנשים רבים מכל העולם שהיו מעוניינים לראות וללמוד אודות הכלבים הנדירים והמיוחדים במינם האלה.

כאשר נותרה בלי קורת גג, חברתה היקרה איזבלה פתחה בפניה את ביתה ולבה, לה ולכלבים, והם עברו לאיטליה וחלקו עמה את ביתה.

איטליה היא מדינה נפלאה, יפהפייה ומלאה באנשים טובים. אך מירנה לא הצליחה לזכות לאשרת תושב קבוע שם. בלי אזרחות, היא אינה זכאית לטיפול בריאותי ואינה רשאית לעבוד. ולמרות כל הבעיות שעברה, לא מדובר בבית. היא חייבת לחזור בקרוב מאוד לישראל.

החזרה לישראל כרוכה בהוצאה ניכרת. המצב השתנה מאז שהגיעה לאיטליה, החוק בישראל שנוגע לנסיעה עם כלבים השתנה ומצב הטיסות השתנה מאוד בגלל מגיפת הקורונה. הבאת הכלבים הבייתה תעלה סכום ניכר, אבל אין מצב שהיא תנטוש את הכלבים שלה – לא משנה היכן נמצא הבית שלה, הוא גם הבית של הכלבים.

מירנה שצליחה איכשהו להסתדר ואין לה משאבים שיכולים לשמש למימון הובלת הכלבים. ידידים מצאו לה ולכלבים מקום מגורים, אבל היא זקוקה לכל הדברים הבסיסיים שנדרשים כדי לחיות, אין לה ריהוט ואבזרים לבית, ואין גדרות שיבטיחו את שלום הכלבים.

ביות הכלב הוא עדיין "שאלה גדולה" מבחינה מדעית. מדענים עדיין מנסים לקבוע בדיוק מתי והיכן החל הביות. במילים אחרות, איך הכלבים הפכו כה משולבים בהתפתחות בני האדם עד כי הם בעצם מהווים בן משפחה נוסף בחיינו.

הכלב הכנעני שקיים היום מכיל תוכן מרוכז ומהודק של מידע שלמעשה מראה לנו את דמותו של הכלב המקורי כאשר הוא החליט לקשור קשר לאדם. מעטים מבינים כמה יקר מידע זה. הוא יכול לעזור לנו להבין תהליכים ביולוגיים רבים הקשורים בפסיכולוגיה, רגשות (והבסיס הניאורו-ביולוגי שלהם), נתונים גנטיים ועוד. מידע זה מהווה אוצר לא רק עבור מדע הכלבים אלא גם לחקר מינים אחרים (כולל האדם). ישנם גזעים מעטים אחרים המסוגלים לספק מידע מעין זה.

קרן זו הוקמה בתקווה שנוכל לאסוף די כסף כדי להביא את מירנה והכלבים שלה חזרה הבייתה לישראל.
