"Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and before long you are doing the impossible..."

Can you help us do the impossible??

The Urban Co-op is a model social enterprise, an organic and sustainable co-operative grocery and wellness hub in Limerick, Ireland. www.theurbanco-op.ie

We are making it easier to be inspired, empowered and supported to flourish, by providing an environment that meets many community needs. This enterprise is run by the community, for the community, under co-operative principles. It has also developed through a significant time of social change and shifts in appreciation for our precious planet. We are making a positive difference to our community and we recognise we can do much more!

Can you contribute to help us accelerate the momentum achieved to date?

We are asking for small donations from many, both near and far, who are aligned to our vision for a future that truly supports communities.

Your contribution will help us to scale up and demonstrate what is possible!

Our target here is €15,000 being sought through many small donations from a wide reach of like minded supporters worldwide who resonate with what we are aiming to achieve.

It is important to us that this crowdfunding is achieved by the power of the collective mindset of many rather than the influence of the benevolent few.

You can chart our progress along the way!

8 years ago a tiny seed idea to develop a community owned grocery was born. A social experiment in self determination, this model was set up following the economic and social impact fallout of a multinational company departure from the city. In this time, we have had many challenges to face and lessons to learn. But we have grown stronger with deeper roots and found ways to help each other build resilience along the way. From a small buying club one hour a week we now are open 7 days as a full grocery and wellness hub.

Fundamentally, we recognise the importance of maintaining support for our local farmers and growers who as custodians of the land help us to maintain access to nourishing food to our growing networks. It has enhanced our lives directly and is valuabe as a model of sustainable living for many more to learn and benefit from.

Supporting community wellbeing drives our mission but we know we can have a bigger impact.

Now more than ever this social enterprise is working to remain a sustainable economic and social option for the community as well as a viable model of the circular economy.

The collaborative approach underpins our work and we want a wider worldwide network to support us in making this enterprise truly an inspiration for others to follow.

A little contribution from a lot will make a major difference as we chart our direction forward in this new sustainable world!

Changing priorities!

It has been a whirlwind since we began our gogetfunding campaign in Feb 2020, and as you know, the world took a different turn shortly after we launched. What we had envisaged then was to build a community kitchen for use on site to complement and enhance our grocery and. . . . .

  • I've seen this group grow from a tiny little space into this big, impressive beautiful shop. Run by a group of inspired parents who care deeply about good health and the local community. Their shop reminds me of the co-op that used to exist in Berkeley, California, where I grew up in the 70s...before it transformed into the Whole Foods giant of today. Those early days are so special. Support local farmers, livestock raisers, and eat local!
