My name is John Mark Añain, 27 years old and currently working here in Singapore as an OFW. Back in June 2018, my mother Teodora Era Anain, 69, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung cancer. Me and my 5 siblings managed to financially support our mother as any good children would normally do, however we knew that at some point in time our resources will slowly ran out. She was first admitted in Medical City for a number of days and we have paid 300,000.00 Philippines Pesos. We were honestly told by the oncologist that this type of sickness is “ubusan ng pera” (will totally empty your pockets), and true enough we are feeling it right now. The cancer cells have metastasized already to the spinal cord and now in the brain.

Since June 2018, she has been consistently taking daily oral chemo (Iressa, the cost is Php 4,400 per tablet / per day) + monthly Xgeva (16 per month) + daily medications + from time to time hospital confinement and quarterly CT Scans. Last May 2019, the oncologist told us that the cancer cells in her lungs were no longer responding to Iressa, prompting him to introduce a new medication. The new medication is called Tagrisso and it costs around 11,000.00 Php per tablet and is needs to be taken daily.

Last July 2019 her condition is not getting any better, her back is consistently aching (11 out of 10 according to her) to the extent that she can no longer walk. She is also experiencing mental lapses or memory lapses already, as if like she was living in the past for 2-4 minutes before she gets back to the present. My mother was asked to undergo Radio Therapy in the spinal/lungs for 10 days and just before she ends her session, she was advised to undergo another 10 days of Radio Therapy this time for her brain due to consistent head pains. The cost and expenses are continuously spiking, and we can no longer cope up with it. We do appreciate the help from government such Philhealth, Senior Citizen discounts and PCSO, but as the expenses started to compound it is really getting tougher for us.

Just today, August 21, 2019 while she is doing her Radio Therapy for the brain, her oxygen level dropped to 60 as well as her blood pressure. Given her condition she was immediately advised by the ER resident to be admitted into ICU. She is currently confined at The Medical City in Ortigas where her Radio Therapy is being administered. We have learned that the rate in ICU is 80,000.00 Philippine peso per day.

At this point in time we have hit the wall, financially, we are doing everything that we could do in order to surpass this challenge but at the moment we are really in the tough spot. We gave it a lot of thoughts whether we should do this or not, but I guess there is nothing wrong in asking for help and there is nothing to be ashamed of acknowledging that we need help. We humbly seek and will appreciate any help anyone can extend to our family. Thank you. God bless us all.
