WHAT HAPPENED?

Tragically last month Long Island bar was the victim of a terrible and destructible fire that has totally destroyed the bar as you can see in the pictures. Everything went up in flames along with our hopes and dreams. We are struggling physically, emotionally and economically. That said we have decided to be strong and fight back life’s hazards, to do everything we can to open up the bar again as fast as possible.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of support this far, but we still have a long way to go and we need all the help we can in getting there. If you are able to, please donate to help us rebuild, every little bit will help, any donations big or small will be hugely appreciated and warmly thanked. Anything you can do, be it a donation, a university flag or decoration (they all went up in flames) a helping hand, suggestions for events to raise funds or even just passing on this message. Also please post some pictures for us on this page to remember the joy the bar has brought each one of you and keep us all positive in this tough time.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us get through this tough time, keeping us positive, and we hope to be able to welcome you again soon in Long Island bar. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and for your generous help.

LONG ISLAND BAR FULL HISTORY

In the early hours of the morning on Friday 29th March one of Long Island’s trusted barstaff, entered the bar with the key we entrusted to him and decided it would be ok for him to help himself to a pizza and then fell asleep while it was cooking in the grill. Thankfully he woke up and got out of the bar safely. However, his selfish actions have turned Long Island into a burnt out shell.

After receiving a call from a Long Island neighbour we rushed down to the bar but we were nowhere near prepared for how bad it would be. By the time we arrived in rush hour traffic the four fire trucks and the police had already left. When we entered the bar we were overcome by the heat and the fumes, everything was black and there was still foggy smoke and ash in the air. Overcome with emotions and anger at the barman’s actions Diego walked away down Calle Betis and in a moment of overload he punched a defenceless tree, (the tree is fine). Diego however, broke his hand and spent the day in hospital having an operation and still has 2 pins in his hand.

WHY SUPPORT US?

During the past month, we have struggled to deal with the shock, keep our positivity and generally come to terms with what has happened. Items can be replaced but the hard work Diego has put in and all the memories of the university flags, number plates, signed t-shirts and other decorations cannot be replaced by an insurance company no matter how much money they give us. This is what upsets us the most.

We received news that the owner of the premises was not insured for the damage done in the building. Our insurance will cover our equipment and merchandise and a percentage of the damage done to the premises. This means that the insurance will not cover the costs to newly rebuild the premises as needed.

So far things are moving very slowly with the insurance they have cleared out the bar and it’s just a black shell. We have had professionals in to give their opinion and prepare us with quotes for the rebuild. They have estimated a total of approximately 40,000 euros.

Majority of the ceiling and the right hand side wall need to be ripped out. All of the electrics have been burnt out or melted. Even the marble bar has cracked with the heat and needs replacing. You can see in the photos the extent of the damage done and the things that melted under the heat.

HISTORY

Long Island was opened 25 years ago by 2 friends, Ken and Jose Manuel, on 19th October 1994 in Calle Troya. They chose the name ‘Long Island’ after the famous cocktail. Originally the majority of customers were British and German students who loved to drink and party. Later, Jose’s brother bought Ken’s share of the business and a lot of you remember Pedro, who worked many years in the bar. Little by little more Americans started coming to the bar and with the great atmosphere and the feeling of a home away from home they began gifting Long Island with memorabilia from their universities. They returned home with a promise to return in the future (which a lot of them, we are happy to say, still do visit!) and they amplified the fame of the bar through word of mouth, sending their friends the following trimester.

Diego took over long island in 2010, nearly 10 years ago. Ever since it has been a second home for us and I know for many of you too. We have strived to make everyone feel welcome and joyful, bringing a ray of sunshine on a rainy day and put a smile on your faces on the tough ones.

Long island is where I met my beautiful wife and many of you lucky couples met your life partners there too. Or at very least you met some special friends and had a great time! It has been a meeting place to enjoy your friends company, meet new people from around the world or somewhere to unwind with a nice cocktail after a long days work. It’s a place with many events, pub quizzes, paella’s and bbq’s.

Just 1 year and 363 days before the fire, Diego reopened the bar in a great new location in Calle Betis. He invested a lot of money to do up the premises and get it looking amazing. Unfortunately Diego had an accident in Feb 2018 which set things back a little. Finally, we were getting back on track and the bar was looking better than ever and doing really well, we saw the light that told us Long Island was finally doing well…. then we found ourselves here asking for help.

HISTORIA COMPLETA DE LONG ISLAND BAR
