Help us to help Khalid!

Help us to help Khalid, whose life was dramatically changed by the Islamic State. After a bomb explosion right next to him, his hearing was damaged and without any medical intervention at that time, he lost his hearing. Together we have the power to change his unfortunate destiny!

Khalid’s story

Khalid is a 17 years old boy from a Yazidi minority group living in Iraq, which was the most persecuted by the Islamic State. In august 2014, while fleeing from ISIS with his family, their car ran out of the petrol. His parents tried to search for some in the nearest house. In the meantime, a bomb exploded close to their car and damaged Khalid's hearing. After a few difficult days on the road, first by car, then even by walking, his family finally founda temporary place to stay in an unfinished building. Khalid did not receive the medical care needed on time.

At the end of 2014, he moved to a refugee camp where a new health issue occurred. He has developed an inflammatory bowel disease. Bloody diarrhea and severe abdominal pain were part of his daily life. Despite the circumstances, Khalid never gave up. He continued to visit the school in the camp. While losing hearing gradually, he has learnt how to read from teacher's lips and he became a smart student.

Our organization called STEP-IN supports him since 2015. At the beginning, we provided him with hearing aid, which was sufficient temporarily. Now the only solution for him is the extremely costly cochlear implant surgery, which is available in private hospitals. We keep hoping that a day will come to afford this surgery. We are grateful for any financial support. Please help us to help Khalid!

Who we really are?

Saint Elizabeth University's Project for Iraq in Need (STEP-IN)

STEP-IN is a humanitarian project aimed at helping internally displaced people from Iraq and refugees from Syria. Our European team together with local employees provides primary health care to thousands of IDPs (internally displaced people) in Northern Iraq. We run two clinics, one in Erbil and another one in Dawoodia camp near Dohuk city. Furthermore, with our mobile clinic, we also visit villages in Dohuk governorate, bringing health care to the places where it is needed the most.

Another meaningful part of our daily work is the Social Cases Program. This initiative is dedicated to the refugees, IDPs and local population from low social classes, who are in a need of special medical care. Khalid is one of them!

In order to understand the reasons behind the launch of this program, it is necessary to be familiar with the situation in Iraq. There is no health insurance system. Health care is supposed to be free of charge, but in reality, it is not. The quality level of medical care in public hospitals is not adequate. Many procedures are not available and waiting periods for surgeries are too long. Moreover, a full price for medication is paid in pharmacies.

From the generous donations of our sponsors, we provide financial help to those who need surgeries, expensive medication, rehabilitations, prosthetic and sensory aids, specific examinations (eg, CT, MRI) or specialist's investigations, which can increase the quality of lives of patients or even save their lives. Thanks to these donations, STEP-IN is able to help people who have already suffered too much. Together we can help neglected persons to live a better life.

It’s quick and easy! Khalid’s story is full of suffering but with the strong vision for a better future. Please donate and help us to make his life affected by war better.

We are grateful for your help and trust in our team!
