Welcome to a new update from the Albritton family! As June is the month of graduations, let us pause to congratulate Violet Albritton for graduating from high school this week! Here is documented proof that Violet did in fact graduate from high school with a smile on her face:

...followed by a lovely evening with her beau:

As to Shawn, progress continues upward! He is more in touch with his faculties, and he can express emotion approapriately, for example here is surprise:

and here is three-peas-in-a-pod-ness:

One final note, for those who had wondered how Shawn and Mary Beth were able to be transported from Florida to Virginia in April, they were able to contact a charity helicopter company called Grace On Wings (www.graceonwings.org). If you are interested, pay them a visit and learn more about the amazing services they offer across the country!

Signing off, see you on the flip side! -John

Everyone,

John here, reporting to you live from a recent visit to Shawn Albritton. Last night, I arrived to a friendly face, surrounded by nurses with sunny dispositions. The day's forecast was upwardly trending. Shawn had just finished eight solid hours of speech/language therapy, memory therapy, and physical therapy. He was exhausted in bed, where I pilloried him with questions about his day. He recognized me, then proceeded to describe his surroundings, his family, the nurses, his daily activities. I asked him what his plans were for the future and, handyman that he is, he described making structural modifications to his bedroom and home exterior. He understood what I was saying, and he responded appropriately. He even attempted to insert some $10-dollar-words into the conversation, which led us down some more creative avenues!

Shawn is pushing the mental and physical obstacles further down the road every day. He sometimes struggles with words, he speaks in a slow whisper, but he recognizes people. I showed him some YouTube cooking videos that he enjoyed, and he played some cellphone games successfully. Needless to say, I am better than him at the video games. I have been practicing. He is very competitive, so he still might beat me one day....maybe.

Then near the end of my visit, a great family friend Reggie arrived, and I handed off the baton to him. As always, the Albritton family is grateful for your warm wishes and generosity. Still no word yet from the IRS on my petition to set up this page as a formal public charity...keeping fingers crossed.

Regards,
John

Everyone,

Greetings one and all! Last night, I paid Shawn a visit at the rehab center. I was met with Shawn sleeping in his bed, and in a chair next to him, the smiling face of their family friend Mary. Every day, Shawn's regimen includes speech/language therapy, memory therapy, and physical therapy. Yesterday evening, Shawn was snoring like a buzzsaw! He has been having a difficult time sleeping through the night, so hearing him snore was very good news.

Not soon after my arrival, dinner was served and Shawn was awoken. You all may remember Shawn's Facebook posts with cooking videos? I showed him a few new ones on my phone, and he smiled and enjoyed them. He is still whispering and speaking in a controlled manner, but he recognizes people and his tone has improved from the previous visit.

After dinner, Shawn nodded off again, and that was our queue to depart. I was very encouraged by the visit; Shawn is a fighter and is working through his therapy every single day. He appreciates everyone and we have every confidence that he will continue on his upward trajectory.

Warm regards, John

Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well. Last weekend I paid a visit to Shawn, Violet, Mary Beth, and her brother James. Shawn is now settled into his rehab regimen in NoVA, with daily exercises, mental training, and visits outdoors. He is speaking (although oftentimes he prefers to move instead), and his personality is intact. His brother-in-law James provided a very helpful metaphor to explain Shawn's current state; he said that Shawn is aware of his surroundings and his condition, but is trapped behind a 'glass wall', as it were. We're all engaged in breaking through the wall, Shawn most of all. Watching Mary Beth, James, and Violet be so encouraging and engaging with Shawn, I have every hope of a successful outcome in time.

And Mary Beth is an excellent patient-advocate. She keeps on top of every procedure, every visit from a care provider, every medication. Shawn is lucky indeed to have a wife and friend in Mary Beth.

Shawn is currently surrounded by a series of challenges. He is on an upward trajectory, but now the real work begins. They genuinely thank everyone for your hopes, your prayers, and your donations. Stay tuned for another update, coming soon. If anyone has any more specific questions, feel free to post your question on this website. I'll see that Mary Beth receives your questions as soon as possible.

Regards, John

Everyone, here is some excellent news. Shawn and Mary Beth flew last Friday from Florida to Northern Virginia! Shawn is awake and eating regularly, able to move limbs and move around. His rehab begins today; as Shawn moves into this next phase of his recuperation, due to his optimal general health, doctors remain very optimistic.

Shawn and Mary Beth are happy and grateful to have so many generous friends and relatives. We are investigating the steps needed to complete registration as a not-for-profit charity, so stay tuned on that front.

Hopefully we should have some pictures to share with the community in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Everyone, I spoke with Mary Beth this morning March 30, 2018, and the news is very encouraging. Shawn is breathing on his own, he is responding to pain and avoidance signals in all extremities, and he is opening his eyes. The swelling is reducing, and thanks to his own optimal physical health, doctors are tentatively more optimistic. All very good news. Mary Beth is by his side constantly. I told her that "she is surrounded by an invisible crowd of well-wishers, a motley crew indeed!" She laughed and agreed. In time, the plan will be to fly Shawn up to Inova Fairfax, where Mary Beth has made arrangements with the best surgeons and neuro rehab teams to begin rehabilitation.

Mary Beth feels the love and caring from everyone. She hopes to be back in Virginia as soon as is possible, and she asks that we continue to keep Shawn in our thoughts and prayers. For sure we can spare some prayers for Mary Beth and Violet and Steven as well! Get well soon Shawn!

Hello Everyone, I heard from Mary Beth today, April 3, 2018. The news continues to be encouraging and on an upward trend! Shawn is aware and is making slow progress. He nodded his head ’yes’ to the nurse last night. He is calm and stable. He follows commands. He explored his environment by visual and tactile means. The neurologist calibrated him at a "4 out of 10", which means awareness and deliberate movements. Also he gives Mary Beth little kisses. He might even be flying home to Virginia this week. I’ll post this update to Facebook as well. Get well Shawn, we are all cheering for you!
