Campaign Story
Hi
My name is Dahlia Maubane and I am a Photographer and Multimedia Designer. Since 2012, I have been working on an ongoing photography project Woza Sisi, that explores the lives of women street hairstylists (aka informal traders) working in the inner city Johannesburg. My project explores the ways in which these women use and navigate that urban space in particular. The Daily Braid Project, an initiative birthed out of my project, aims to empower this community of women street hairstylists.
On March 25, the South African government ordered a countrywide Lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This has fundamentally changed the world we live in, the world as we know it. Informal traders face numerous challenges as a result of the Lockdown. Only traders who sell fruit and vegetables have been given permission to trade, while all the other traders have had their main source of income cut off. Street hairstylists have a social responsibility to stop touching clients and practice social distancing and in this way play a role in flattening the curve. This has had an impact on the livelihoods of many street hairstylists and their families.
Together with Meals on Wheels, we will be distributing care packs worth R650 to 20 identified street hairstylists operating in the inner city of Johannesburg. Help us fund the packs with any amount you can contribute so we can help see them through this Lockdown period.
Each pack contains:
- 12,5kg Maize Meal
- 5kg cake flour
- 5kg Rice
- 2 kg samp
- 4 tins of Baked Beans
- 2 tins Pilchards
- 2kg Speckled Beans
- 1kg Salt
- 2kg sugar
- 2L oil
- 5 sachets of soup powder
- 80 Tea bags
- 750g coffee
- 2 Boxes of soya
- 750g powdered milk
- 4 Bars Soap
- toothpaste
Thank you for making this possible.
