Campaign Story
Early the morning of 12 April 2022, due to heavy rains and the nearby river bursting its banks, incredibly serious volumes of water came onto the property of Terrence & Karin Byrne , near the Bluff , Durban KZN .
In a short space of time the depth of the water was 2 metres plus. Terrence and his wife swam across to Karin’s step-dad, about 40 metres away. In that wooden house they propped themselves up as best they could. At some point the water was even splashing over the roof. Having one phone between them, they sent a few messages out. Sea Rescue tried to get to them, but turned back. Some of family friends contacted the army and Police. A Police helicopter went out. They tore the roof open and then hoisted them up and took them to safety.
The Byrne family are left with the clothes on their Backs , their house and car and all their belongings , were destroyed in the flood waters .
They have to start all over again , food , clothing , blankets , furnishings.
Let’s please open our hearts to help this beautiful, hard working family to get a few of the items that were lost .
We are just so thankful that they are all safe now .
The loss of property, lives and livelihoods is really unfathomable. My heart goes out to each and everyone of you that is going through this!
In times of need it’s always the people you least expect to help, who really go above and beyond. Hats off to all the emergency response teams and the neighbours helping out.
Let’s stand together .
