A FLIGHT TO INNOVATION

Background

I am a Tanzanian girl from Southern Tanzania and a high school junior at the International School of Moshi (ISM) near Mt Kilimanjaro. ISM is one of the top high schools in Tanzania, and I earned a merit scholarship to attend this school because I had a GPA of 4.9 and scored among the ten best students in the country on the national exam.

I have been accepted by the Yale Young Global Scholars Program this summer and have been granted a full tuition scholarship. It is my dream to attend the program, but I can’t afford the airfare to travel from Tanzania to New Haven, CT. So I am trying to independently raise 1440 pounds (US$ 2200) by June 20th on www.gogetfunding.com to pay for my transportation to the U.S. this July. I believe that the experience from attending the program will benefit my community in Tanzania. My story is on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsoNmYP89Ks&feature=youtu.be

This is a personal project based on education and learning. As a student, opportunities with great potential are worth taking. The Yale Young Global Scholars summer program (YYGS) is a pre-collegiate summer program that runs three distinct sessions: Science, Policy and Innovation; Politics, Law and Economics and Studies in Grand Strategy. According to my interests, I chose to attend the Science, Policy and Innovation session.YYGS has a mission to educate an increasing number of international students and to expose them to global issues. The program will provide me with an unforgettable academic experience, a chance to flourish in a new learning environment and to explore new academic interests. I am looking forward to meeting a talented community of fellow students and engage with the world – renowned professors and extraordinary visiting practitioners.

My Flight to Innovation Will Help Tanzania

This program provides a great potential for me as a student as well as a Tanzanian citizen. As a student of the Yale summer program, I will have the opportunity to learn new things which will certainly make a difference in my academic and personal life. Most importantly as a Tanzanian citizen, succeeding to raise the funds and attending Yale this summer will help me become a role model to other Tanzanians and African girls who are oppressed and need hope. As there are many students in Africa who cannot access this opportunity, I will use my experience to help shine a light to them. This will have a great impact on my community and the country at large.

Moreover, there are few Tanzanian women or girls involved in innovation or technology education and development. My hope is that this experience will act as a call to action for more girls and women to become interested in innovation. It will also demonstrate to other Tanzanians that there are global opportunities for us to obtain education and that we can use this to make a difference in our communities.

I am excited to attend Yale’s summer program this July and to encourage other girls in Tanzania to strive for higher educational goals. Please help me by visiting my site on www.gogetfunding.com and contributing towards my transportation costs from Tanzania to the U.S.

Asante Sana,

Angel Ngulumbi
