Gay Asylum-Seeker Needs Help

I'm gay. I'm not safe here.

My name is Badrul Munir. I am a gay college student in Indonesia. I am asking for your help so I can apply for asylum in Canada.

I was born and raised in Banyumas, a tiny, poor village in the Central Java region of Indonesia. Currently, through a part time job, I attend a private university in Jakarta, the capitol city of Indonesia. I will graduate in a couple of months. But there is no future here for me. In this deeply religious, Muslim county, gay people are not welcome.

I will never have the luxury of being out here. Violence and discrimination against gay people are common here. Following advice like "be who you are" or "don't give a shit about what others think" would put me in danger and possibly cost me my life.

I am too afraid to tell anyone who I am, even an open-minded friend or relative. The consequences of always having the shadow of my lie looming over me are too high.

It is nearly impossible to confide in anyone here, even other gay people. Most gays here, believe it is wrong for them to be gay, so they do not understand me or how I feel. This makes it extremely challenging to find genuine gay friends here.

I am not safe here. I GIVE UP having to live in fear of my truth.

I must move to another country where I will be accepted for who I am. I want a future with a husband and a little family.

My goal is to apply for Canadian asylum. Canada is a very welcoming country for LGBTQ+ refugees based on my research. But traveling to Canada to apply for asylum is costly.

I struggle every week to have enough money for food and housing. I will never get to Canada without financial help. I need your donation to make this goal a reality.

I am asking for donations to help pay my airfare, deposit for the visa, one month's housing and food expenses (until I get help from a Non-Government Organization based in Toronto), and the visa fees.

Here is the breakdown of the fees I need: (All amounts in US Dollars)

• ACCOMMODATION & DEPOSIT FOR VISA (including housing, food, transport, personal care and other expenses for a month) : $2,908
• VISA COST : $85
