My students need an area rug and other flexible seating options to promote community and enhance learning.
My Students
As a teacher in a Title I school, the children in my class face challenges/obstacles that most of us could not fathom. I'd like for school to be their home away from home...a comfortable, inviting environment that fosters a love of learning.
I have a wonderful group of fourth graders and would like to make this a year they will never forget!
The experiences they have this year could really cement their love of school, and provide a positive attitude that will stay with them for their entire educational careers.
My Project
I have read article after article on the flexible seating craze that is overtaking education these days. I have actually had somewhat of a "flexible seating" classroom for a long time. I've always tried to give students a choice in where they work in letting them use carpet squares on the floor, bean bags, a loft for reading, etc. I would like to take this one step further and offer my children many more options.
If the students have lots of seating options, they can find what works best for them and can be the most productive.
I would like to have an area rug for whole group lessons/instruction so we can engage one another in conversation and build a true classroom community. I would like to have many individual seating options, such as balance discs (can be placed on the floor or a chair), bean bag chairs, scoop rockers, a "new to us" couch, and yoga/balance balls. We could also use supply storage carts as they will allow us to utilize tables and individual seating options more efficiently.
