Campaign Story
On 18 March 2016, the European Union and Turkey signed an agreement aiming to address the overwhelming flow of smuggled migrants and asylum seekers traveling from Turkey to the Greek islands. To do so, it allowed Greece to return to Turkey new irregular migrants arriving after the agreement was signed. In exchange, EU Member States would increase resettlement of Syrian refugees sheltered in Turkey, as well as speed up the visa liberalization for Turkish nationals, and boost existing financial support for Turkey’s refugee population.
Nonetheless, the past Thursday 27th February, the Turkish government decided to cancel the agreement and open Turkey's borders to allow the departure of those who wish to travel to Europe. Since then, hundreds of thousands have started a caravan to the borders that Turkey shares with Greece and Bulgaria with the dream of reaching the European Union. After the Turkish authorities allowed them to pass, hundreds of people got trapped in the border area since Greek authorities do not allow them to continue further, while the Turks do not allow them to return.
Given the situation, we want to raise money to provide these men, women and children with first-need products like water, food and blankets* to facilitate this new step in an already hard and traumatic path towards safety.
*Depending on the support given, we will bring the products by ourselves (with the help of whoever wants to volunteer) or we will collaborate with local organisations/groups that are already assisting the people on the border.
