I am only one semester away from being the first member of my family to complete college. I am a returning adult male who has returned to college. I have been at it for almost five years. I am almost fifty-six years old. I started this while I was living in San Diego, CA. It has been nothing but an uphill battle since the day that I have started. While I was in school, I operated a pedicab to help pay my way and maybe have enough money to live off of. A pedicab, bike-taxi, or rickshaw is not an easy way to make money. Most of the operators were J-1 Visa students from other countries and the competetion was fierce. I did it though, just barely. I was renting a Single Room Occupancy room at a hotel downtown and sometimes I could not make the lease money and had to find places to sleep. Sometimes I would sleep on the Trolley and just ride for hours so that I could rest. Sometimes I would just have enough money to eat. sometimes not. I am in Connecticut now and have been going to an excellent school. I have had a hard time here as well. I worked for a small salary and with the hours that my old boss made me work would equal more that sixty hours a week and that made my wages much less than minimum. Not only that he made me work five full days and that left me with only two days for classes. I was taking a full load of classes. I worked and went to school seven days a week. I was always exhausted and I managed to keep my GPA at a modest 3.2. I asked for one day off of work and he would tell me that he would not be able to use me. I told him that I would work ten or twelve hours a day for four days; he said no. Now I have internship and that means five classes this semester. My classes are spread out in three whole days and one class on another day. My internship is with the school's Student Accesability Services. I am helping those with special needs be succesful in my college. I was laid off because of my school schedule. If I am successful, I will graduate this summer. I also am a Volunteer for the New Haven branch of The literary Volunteers of America. I am going to school and teaching people to read and write. I want to help other when I graduate. I will be an advocate for women, children, and older people. I need some help so that I can continue to help others. I have all of my tuition and books paid off. I have enough for public transportation. I only need some money to pay for half of rent in a modest apartment in Branford, CT. If I can get enough to take care of my rent, utilites, and some food, I will be okay. I only need about six hundred dollars a month for the rest of this semester. I have a few positions that are open to me once I graduate. One is working for the state of California. I may have a position here at my school if there is enough money to hire me. All I am really asking for is some time. Any money given to me will free me from having to work so much that I cannot complete my studies, internship, and volunteer work. All money is supporting good causes. When I finish and start work I will be able to convince my daughter to go and finish school. I used to tell her that she needed to go to school and she would ask me why as I had never went to school. Well, once I started I had to finish otherwise she would be able to say that it was no use because I quit. Well once I had started, I had to finish. I had to have something to use to get her to go to college too. Please help me. I have been looking for part-time work since before Christmas and it seems that I am too old for some people to work for them. They do not understand that I can work like no other. I walk home five miles three days a week because the busses quit running to Branford when I an in class. Give what you can. I will only use this to live off of while I finish this semester. Thank youRobert
