Financial Support for Hyperthyroidism Student

I am an overseas student from Malaysia who was admitted into the Emergency Department at Wollongong Hospital due to episode of hyperthyroidism presented with malaise, unconsciousness and tremor. I was retained at the hospital for investigation and management of syndrome.

Unfortunately, BUPA and travel insurance reject to pay for my bill because of pre-existing condition policy and waiting period not served. The public hospital is charging me at full cost of my hospitalisation including accommodation, doctor’s bill, pathology and diagnostic procedures, which are three times higher than usual. The public hospital policy charges unreasonable high cost to ineligible overseas patient, I am faced with an estimation of $7000 unsettled bill which I have no means to pay off. I have depleted my savings to repay part of them, there is no financial assistance other than a repayment plan that is hardly achievable requiring $500 fortnightly.

The hospital bill itself is a financial hardship for me and my family despite being severely sick at the very moment. Even though ongoing review is recommended by doctor, I cannot afford the expenses. I’m foregoing my treatment because I can’t afford to have them in Australia. I need to go home for cheaper medical treatment, but I cannot leave Australia due to enormous medical debt I currently owed.
