OVERVIEW:
We are final year students at Temasek Polytechnic, Digital Film and Television, Singapore. My team and I are working on a 15 minutes short film titled, Final Year (岁月长留), a heartfelt story about a retained student who must graduate in order to fulfil her late mother's wish or else she will lose her only family left, her grandfather.
STORY SYNOPSIS:
Losing her mother to the pandemic they are in, Ke Yin struggles to move on from her grief as she lives under the same roof with her grandfather, Tian Fa. Her regret at losing a chance in order to fulfil her late mother's graduation wish is all gone - resulting in her putting up a barrier for a new relationship. This makes Tian Fa recreate the moment by achieving a perfect graduation for her with his qualified tailoring skills. Only to realise graduation has been cancelled, Tian Fa’s efforts made Ke Yin realised that the loss of her mother is the gain of her selfless grandfather.
DIRECTOR'S INSPIRATION (Why do I want to tell this story? -Director):
Our film draws inspiration from the events that have been happening recently in our current world, the COVID-19 pandemic. Having friends and seniors who are supposed to be graduating in the AY19/20, the pandemic has caused them many troubles. One of them is being unable to have a graduation ceremony. Debates have been rising online, causing many controversies. Parents are also stepping out to support their children - to see them graduate with pride on that stage, receiving that certificate they have been longing for.
Seeing many articles online about it, it surprises me as I did not expect that this "graduation" matter would blow up. I wanted to find a deeper meaning to why students (and parents) are willing to risk their life to get that certificate. That's when I realised, it's all about moving on, knowing that we've achieved something in life - to be able to feel that moment that we've been working hard for. We deserve that moment.
Lastly, as a teenager myself, I wanted to write a story that I will be able to relate to and allow the audience to know the importance of family. My parents have been supporting me so much & I really want to appreciate them. And, it is written to show how every parent/grandparent really wants the best for their child/grandchild. And, yes, it may be hard for some of us to show our proper appreciation (I've been there) but it doesn't hurt to be filial before it is too late.
WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT US?
- Hope to bring out the message of resilience.
This value is seen in both of our main characters. As for Ke Yin, she is resilient and does her best despite being a retained student. Her resilience is also portrayed when she faces the challenges that comes at her. As for Tian Fa, he does not give up in trying to reach out to Ke Yin. Despite his old age and whatever obstacles that came his way, he pushed through to sew a gown for his granddaughter, Ke Yin. We included this value in our film in hopes to encourage our audience to never give up.
- Highlight the importance of family.
In this pandemic, it’s also a test of family bonds. It can get stronger or weaker depending on the way we want it to be. For Ke Yin, she only had Tian Fa left as her only family member after the recent loss of her mother. She kept avoiding him only to realise at the end that she needed him as much as he needs her. Therefore, we hope our audience would understand the importance of our family and to never let them go despite the ups and downs that they might be going through.
- To honour the graduating batch of 2020.
This film was made to commemorate the graduating batch that could not have a proper graduation ceremony due to the pandemic. Due to the pandemic, there have been debates on whether the graduation ceremony is vital for students. Expressing our take on this, we feel that as much as a graduation ceremony matters a lot to us, we also believe that the heart behind it is what matters the most. The action of receiving our certificate and wearing a gown is definitely heartfelt. But, all of that would not matter if we do not have our loved ones with us to celebrate these precious moments. Therefore, through this film, we would like to encourage the unfortunate graduated batch to take heart and know that even though there wasn’t a proper ceremony for them, their loved ones are still proud of them no matter what.
- Support us in making this film happen!
As a team, since this is our Final Year Project that we are working on before we graduate from Temasek Polytechnic School of Design, Digital Film & Television (DFT), we sincerely hope we can get as much support as possible from everyone who comes across this campaign. Even a minimum amount of $1 from each person will go a long way in helping us achieve our dream of making this short film possible. We will definitely credit you for your kind assistance at the end of the film.
