As some of you may or may not know Rebecca and Ellie have recently spent some time out in rural Uganda. After setting up a charity (registration in progress) called The Uganda School Project, we finally raised enough money to head out and start our project earlier this year.
Makenya Primary School is the first of (hopefully) many more schools that we want to support. When we arrived the school it consisted of 3 teachers 500 pupils, a derelict church and a tarpaulin hanging from a tree. Water was a two mile walk away and most of the children were surviving on one small meal of maize in the evening. Since then we have two big classrooms along with proper desks, blackboards and stationary, an office and storage area, proper sanitary pit-latrines, a rain catching water tank and even a kitchen to prepare daily porridge for the children.
We are now on the last stages of our pilot school and with a little further funding, we think we can leave various initiatives in place for the school to be self sustainable. Donations from this event will go towards a variety of final projects such as school resources and equipment, livestock and crops etc. We'd also like to provide them with solar power so they can use donated laptops to teach computer literacy (a basic skill which would mean the difference between going on to further education/employment or unemployment and poverty).
So come and join us for what looks to be a great evening and extremely worthwhile cause.
Donation amount for tickets is £20.
