Campaign Story
After Hurricane Maria destroyed the lives, plans, property and health of many people in Puerto Rico, we decided it is time to act. This devastation is the biggest crisis we have faced in modern history and on top of all the destruction of the hurricane, our agriculture and vegetation were destroyed. Gardens and farms were left in ruins and schools/communities who produced their own vegetables no longer have a garden accessible.
We are working to fix this!
Our initiative called "Reverdece Puerto Rico" or "ReGreen Puerto Rico" in English has a mission of bringing plants back to our islands while also helping create a future of food sovereignty and less dependence on imports.
Our objective is to reforest with fruit trees in a process to support households, collaborate with community leaders and create communities that are food secure and connected to their surrounding environment.
So far we have reached 6,000+ families with the creation of fruit tree parks and/or giving out fruit trees + seeds in all the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico!
What we do:
- Building fruit tree parks with communities, spaces where all neighbors can learn about nature and have access to safe, free and healthy food.
- Giving out seeds at various locations in Puerto Rico.
- Visiting affected communities to give them fruit trees and supplies
- Visiting and giving seeds in schools
What your donation will help with:
Help us grow our own trees to give to communities
Help us buy fruit trees and organic seeds from local vendors
Pay for materials to build fruit tree parks
Pay for transportation to visit communities all over Puerto Rico
Please write to us at [email protected] if you wish to donate supplies, trees or seeds.
Thank you for your support and for being part of rebuilding a sustainable Puerto Rico!
This work began to be organized by the PR Chapter of Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN PR), an organization founded in 1992 that is dedicated to solve the problems that environment and youth face in the Caribbean region.
Our chapter grew and learned a lot thanks to the success and inspiration that we got from this project. Thanks to all of your support we are growing and continue to work under our new name Caribe Siembra. We are more energized than ever to continue doing our part for reforestation and food security.
