Bulimia is a serious and potentially fatal disorder distinguised by a regular cycle of binge eating and purging. It is extremely harmful to the body and could damage the entire digestive system if not treated properly. The issue is that treatment is very expensive, so many patients either have a hard time paying for it, or are discouraged from seeking help if their insurance companies do not cover it. Bulimia is a mental illness, so many insurance companies do not cover the costs as they would if it were a physical illness, or they don't cover costs after the patient returns to a normal weight. This is an issue when dealing with a patient who sought cure because after about a month of treatment, the patient has returned to a normal weight and is discharged. At this time, the patient hasn't mentally recovered, so relapse is extremely common in most cases. Eating disorders are legitamate illnesses and should be treated to the fullest. Lets feed our patients and their families some hope by helping aid those who are denied coverage or discharged early.
