Our neighbours in Fiji are doing it tough. Prior to Covid, tourism made up 38% of the country’s economy. In 2018, the industry provided direct employment to an estimated 156,500 people. That was in a population of only 883,000 people!

Not only that, but those employed in the tourism industry were often bringing their wages home and distributing the money amongst large households, and several generations of family members.

(That’s the wonderful thing about Fiji - there is a culture of sharing wealth when it is available, and supporting not only your immediate family, but also your extended family, neighbours and friends.)

And right now they need our help.

When Covid hit, flights ground to a halt, tourism operations shut down, and staff were sent home with no idea when they would return to work.

After keeping the virus out of Fiji for over a year, they then succumbed to the Delta strain, with over 51,000 cases. At one stage they had the highest per capita rate of Covid in the world.

The virus ripped through villages, partly due to poor hygiene, but also because of the close quarters in which families lived.

The outbreak's case numbers peaked in July recording more than 1,200 new infections daily. Lockdowns were strict, preventing movement around the islands.

This has been financially devastating for so many.

Although many communities have gone back to a simpler way of living - growing veggies, etc - basic needs are currently not being met. Families are lacking adequate food, but to make it worse, they’re also lacking hygiene essentials - even soap for hand washing (a Covid staple!).

This is where YOU come in.

Here at IVI, we are collecting donations to purchase food packs for families in need. Just AU$105 will purchase essentials that can bring much needed relief to a household for 2-3 weeks.

Here’s a full list of what’s in the food packs:

We will track exactly where your donation goes.

We are working with a trusted and respected local family on the ground in Viti Luvu (the main island of Fiji) who will make sure the care packages are properly and fairly distributed. This amazing family volunteers their time, so there are no wages or admin fees to be paid at the other end.

This means that 100% of your donation reaches its intended recipients.

We also have more plans for when the world opens up (yep - we’re ready!).

When travel restrictions ease, IVI has a plan in place to send groups of volunteers back to Fiji, where we will resume doing health checks, health education and our diabetes prevention projects. As part of these trips, the volunteers will also help to distribute more food packages.

Please help - even small donations add up fast.

Every AU$105 we raise feeds a family of 4 for 2-3 weeks.

If you have ever been to Fiji or have been lucky enough to be friends with a Fijian person, you will know that they are some of the most welcoming, caring, positive people on the planet. It’s our turn to show them some kindness now, to help fill the gap until the country can get back on its feet.

A huge Vinaka Vakalevu (Thank You) in advance for your generosity.
