Fundraiser for the Chapa Flores family’s medical bills.?(ENGLISH)Life can change drastically from one day to the next. Our family didn’t know how true that expression was until April 2014. Our father (61) was being treated for early-onset Alzheimer’s since 2012. This February we noticed signs that his dementia was progressing more rapidly than it had before. Tests found a tumor in his kidney that had gone undetected long enough to spread to his lungs and brain. The same week we found out about my father’s condition, our mom (56) started complaining of abdominal pain. Initially the doctors thought it was gallstones, and when they ran further tests, they determined she had a growth in her pancreas. When the pathology report came back it was confirmed to be a carcinoma. Fortunately, her cancer hasn’t shown signs of metastasizing yet.Due to the nature of my father’s dementia, his business started to suffer a few years ago, and he eventually had to close its doors for good.  As his health worsened, he became unable to work all together. Long story short: we are in a very difficult financial situation, and looking at estimated cost of care of around $300,000 – $400,000 (at least) for each of them.  To make matters worse, their status as recent U.S. immigrants has made it nearly impossible for them to qualify for financial assistance, and our attempt to get them health insurance has not yielded any results. As you can imagine, dealing with one parent with cancer is hard enough, but dealing with both parents simultaneously has been a devastating blow to our family. When our friends, family and coworkers asked us how they could help, we decided to set up this page in order to facilitate donations. We are trying everything we can to give them the quality of care they deserve, and don’t have a firm grasp on how much we are going to need to provide that yet. For now, we want to focus your donations on relocation and treatment expenses. We thank you for your generosity and support, and hope you will share our cause with your friends, family and coworkers.
