Thomas Mpofu was attacked by a group of seven illegal miners on 8 December 2017 as he and a co-worker tried to stop the makorokozas from digging up a road at the family farm. Thomas was axed several times on the right side of the head and he lost his right eye on the scene. He only got to hospital hours after being injured, with police and ambulance services nowhere to be seen. He was taken to Esigodini Hospital by his employer with the assistance of a police officer from Bulawayo and BCC rangers who work in the area nearby.
Our family is seeking your help to raise funds for Thomas’ facial reconstruction surgery, which will include metal plates being inserted to repair his fractured eye socket, nose and jaw as well as the reconstruction of his tongue and gums. At present, he is suffering from constant headaches and has difficulty performing simple tasks such as eating and drinking.
Although Thomas has been shockingly disfigured he refuses to bow his heads or withdraw from the world. It is truly remarkable and inspiring how he has not only survived this attack but is determined to make the best situation out of it.
Your help is paramount, and we humbly need your every contribution, be it $1 or $1,000 or even just your voice to share the story. So please support us by sharing our funding page with your friends, family members and colleagues! With more people aware of Thomas’ plight, we will be one step closer to reaching our goal, to help Thomas regain hope and to lead a normal life.
We will use these funds to help Thomas through his horrible ordeal in what can only be called a senseless tragedy in this modern era.
