The Problems

The UNICEF Humanitarian Action Report noted that feminine hygiene materials were a critical issue for Women in the battle against bacterial infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently 80 % of girls and women in the democratic republic of Congo cannot afford sanitary pads which retail at USD 6.02 per packet. During menstruation, they use unhygienic practices like old mattresses, traditional leaves and papers, which expose them to infection. Girls are also unable to study during their periods.  Ezomba Project manufactures affordable sanitary pads which retail at less than $ 0,5 US per packet for low income, mostly underprivileged people and rural populations.  Ezomba Project has developed a sanitary pad, designed with hemp textiles combined with breathable materials.  The hemp textiles for sanitary pads are produced in different rural villages by women and farmers who work to improve their incomes.

What is the innovation?
Ezomba Project develops a new generation, low-cost, reusable (washable) cloth sanitary pads. The cloth sanitary pads have been developed using new technologies that combined breathable materials and textiles produced by hemp.
Who gains the most?
By promoting the use of sanitary napkins, a direct impact can be expected on women’s health, as they are vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections with the traditional method of using cloth. Additionally, women and farmers who work to produce textiles will improve their incomes.
Who pays?

Womens and girls are the aimly beneficiaires. The sanitary pads cost $ 0,5 US per packet and the revenues of sales
are affected to fund INFOGROUP INTERNATIONAL, a non-profit that support social change and sustainable development.
