Campaign Story
Remember High School?
Some of you may or may not have known that Kenyon dropped out of high school this year.
When I asked him why he said "no one cared if I was there are not." He also let me know that it was hard for him to sit in a desk for 6 hours a day, being "talked to."
There was a big part of me that understood what he was saying, there was a bigger part inside of me freaking right out!!!!!! My son is a hight school drop out?!?!!
I cried for 5 days.
Im a college instructor who values education, how can I have a drop out teenager?
Of course my mind ran with it.....another urban Aboriginal stat... what did I do wrong?....is he being bullied?.... does he have a learning difference?....
It was hard not to take it personally, it was a big hit for my ego.
We worked with a Aborignal councellor at the school, re-jigged his time table, got him into the "right classes with the right teachers"
It still wasn't working.
I stopped making him go to the Brick & Mortor school as it was making him angry, it was sad. It was a hard 5 months to say the least.
After I let go of what society thought was right for my family, I discovered what was really happening. My son was frustrated at how he was being taught, he was angry at the old fashion structure. We researched a lot about the current state of affairs regarding the public education system - we found that there are a lot of unhappy families out there. I explored our local homeschool net-work, alternative schools (that wouldn't take him because he was to young, they were full or we missed the registration deadline).
I found UNSCHOOLING, breathed deep & trusted.
My new mantra was : "LET GO OR BE DRAGED"
We also learned about the Super Indendent of the Golf Island School District who was unhappy with the education system and decided to open his own school here in Victoria, Fall 2013.

Kenyon has been interviewed by the Founder & Principle Jeff Hopkins and has been excepted into the program.
HOWEVER we do not have $7,000 to pay for the tuition. Because it is a brand new school it does not have Financial aid, bursaries or scholarships yet - they will next year.

*Please know as an educator and a trained Social Workers myself I am not pointing my finger, there are a lot of factors at play here, I also know there are a lot of FANTASTIC teachers out there, making a difference & doing what they can in the current system.
