Engineers Without Borders-UCL's mission is to provide a platform of opportunities for UCL students to collaborate and help remove barriers to human development through engineering.

The society is strongly supported by the national charity Engineers Without Borders-UK.  Student-led community development initiatives, not only make a positive contribution to poverty alleviation and international development, but also provide opportunities for University students to inspire the next generation of engineers to use their skills to make a global impact.

Presently, the society has established partnerships and is running projects in Africa and South America.
?

One of the projects is based in a small area called Jardim de gonzaga – Brazil. The project is aimed at tackling various sanitation and water problems in the area by teaching the community to build sustainable, simple and reliable infrastructure. This empowers the local community and fosters community cohesiveness.

Our Aims

To work together with the inhabitants to construct and promote a self-sustainable Rural Aquaculture system.

The system would comprise of:

a) Rain water collection area (roof of the beneficiaries homes)
b)  Conveyance system of canals and waterfalls to deliver the rainwater from the rooftop to the fish tank and/or pond.
c) Bio filtration boxes for water purification
d) Pond for water collection and primary storage from different water sources, as well as further water purification
e) Pump to deliver purified water to the storage tank
f) Elevated storage facilities for continuous water supply
g) Fish tanks for fish production.

The system would not only provide fish and vegetables for the beneficiaries but in the long term, could also be a source of additional income when surplus fish and vegetables are harvested.
