In February of 2018 I was working at a "British" school in Morocco as a Debate Coach. They suddenly wanted me to start teaching science mid-year, which was certainly in my bailiwick. However, a couple weeks after I began, as we began to prepare for the annual Darwin Day- my son Darwin's 1st ever Darwin Day- I was suddenly informed that evolution is "only a theory", and could not be taught as "fact". Incidentally, there would be no Darwin Day. In vain I tried to explain to the school what a theory actually means in science, that there is no "only" in front of it, that Muslims all over the world accept evolution, that it is basic science, that I had been teaching evolution to Muslim Moroccans for 12 years. I could only teach it as one of a number of competing ideas. The school would not bend.
I told the school that I could not teach under those circumstances, and that they were not allowing me to fulfill my position as a science teacher. Additionally, the school refused to assist me as promised in getting the national identity papers that would allow me to legally stay in the country and work, and because they dragged their feet on it, my time was rapidly coming up.
We thus in the span of three weeks had to suddenly leave my position and the country I had lived in for over a decade, the country I loved. And this cost us.
The school never told me, but they never sent the final paycheck, and then didn't respond to calls, and then refused to send my final paycheck of $1500. We spent $1760 on emergency shipping, and then $1525 on plane fare. Only to find out that Air Canada would take our money, but not allow my wife to transit through Canada. We spent a whole day in the airport with a fussy infant trying to find a way out of the country, and spent an additional $2300 for the wonderful Air France to get out of the country to relative safety in America. With additional fees, this all came to $7341- all because I would only teach scientific truth to students, and we couldn't legally remain in the country.
