Campaign Story
I was teaching at a school in Morocco and half-way through the year they asked me to start teaching biology, which I was happy to do. But they suddenly stated I could not teach evolution as true. They were surprised at my resistance, and that I cared so much about teaching science accurately. I asked them, "Have you met my son Darwin?" (They had.) They invited me to leave the school if I had a problem with that. As I had an ethical commitment to my students within my profession as a biology teacher, I took their offer. But the school never provided the legally-required visa, and thus my wife and newborn were forced to leave the country with two weeks notice. Combined with the school's refusal to give the legally required final paycheck, shipping items from living there for 12 years, last minute plane flights and replacement plane flights when Air Canada refused to fly my Filipino wife through Canada, we had a subsequent loss of $7,000, ate into all our savings, maxed out our credit cards, and were ill-prepared for the start of a pandemic.
