There is an old African proverb which says ‘’It takes a whole village to raise a child’’ and by donating as little as $3.20 you can help Bupe, and many more vulnerable children have a quality education that gives them a fighting chance to step out of the cycle of poverty. Simpact Foundation a philanthropic organisation based in Zambia that is involved in women economic empowerment and providing basic education for vulnerable children in poor communities. We are looking to raise US$21,150 to provide essential textbooks for vulnerable children in 29 severely underfunded community schools.
It’s estimated that about 25 percent of Zambian children attend overcrowded community schools which rely on meagre contributions from the community. With close to 60 percent of Zambia’s children living in poor households funding for most community schools is severely constrained. Unfortunately, children in these schools learn without the basic required textbooks and in a few instances where textbooks are available, children often have to share a book amongst 10 or more. To compound the situation the schools are plagued with poor infrastructure, limited learning tools and lack of sufficient trained teachers. According to UNICEF data around 740,000 school aged children in Zambia are not in school while only about 30 percent of Zambian adolescents will attain a high school education.
