Me against the world

They say it all starts with a dream—a goal that one wants to pursue for their life. Let me tell you the story of a kid who learned to dream while the world was against him. This is my story, and I really hope it inspires people to dream or helps somebody with their dream.

As you all know, life is not easy. There is always something trying to knock one down, and for me, there was. It all started at birth—being adopted and not even having the opportunity to grow up with your real parents was tough. On top of it, I ended up not having a chance to grow up with my adopted parents either; what are the odds of that happening? My adopted dad passed away when I was 3 years old, and then my adopted mom passed away shortly after when I was 6 going onto 7.

Already, the world was against me in some way, but fortunately, I was adopted again into another family, for which I am very grateful. As I grew older, I started dreaming and believing that I could become anything I wanted to and that anything is possible if you strive to achieve it.

My Experience

Surf Coach:

I became an accredited surf coach at the age of 16 with Surfing South Africa. Through surf coaching, I got the opportunity to help out at one of our local surfboard factories, where I learned about surfboard crafting. I got taught how to repair dings and the basics of laminating surfboards.

Barista:

Another skill that was taught to me at a young age was at a coffee shop in my home town, Jeffreys Bay .

This taught me how to serve people and to have a consistent work ethic. I was fortunate enough to do this work for about 6 months.

Yacht Builder:

In 2019, I had the opportunity to apply for a learnership at a well-established yacht building company, and by the grace of God, I got in! I have been in the yacht-building industry for close to 5 years now.

Surf Judge:

I have also acquired my surf judging certificate, in between my full time job I do judging of surf events as an extra because I enjoy working at surfing events.

A heart to make a difference

My plan was always to go yachting overseas, but that was about fulfilling my desire and not God's desire to make a difference in the lives of people. I now realize that my life experiences, whether good or bad, and the skills I've learned are not for myself but for others.

My mission now is to help uplift, train, equip, and empower the younger generation with the necessary skills they'll need to better their lives.

The goal: Wave Point Foundation.

My goal is to join the Wave Point Foundation, a local NPO that focuses on uplifting, supporting, and empowering young people in Jeffreys Bay through their leadership skills program using surfing as the vehicle.

Like the kids on their program, I myself didn’t have any experience or knowledge in the field I am in. It took a surfboard shaper to give me an opportunity to learn and teach me the ways of a craftsman. This gave me the confidence to reach for more.

This is the gap I want to fill where we, as a foundation, can inspire the youth to dream and get the confidence they need to one day confidently go into the workplace or even start their own business.

My focus will be:

• Setup surfboard ding repair bay

• Basic surfboard design

• Surf School

• Basic composite skills and basic building skills

• Plumbing

• Wood work

• Flooring

• Painting
