Many Children are not in school.
Many children do not either attend school regularly or dropout of school altogether. Children find themselves in this sorry state because of the general poverty state facing many families; they are orphaned, parents are poor, parents are sickling, parents are in urban areas looking for low paying and exploitative jobs, children’s are of young poor single mothers.
Moreover, despite the government running free Primary education, high other levies and lack of sustainable income among families have made the access to education a preserve of the few lucky ones. While the introduction of free primary education by the government in the Year 2003 was a laudable move, lack of corresponding good will has resulted to poor quality in education. We wont advocate against free primary, but put in place measures that will enhance access to quality education.
Child abuse practices and child labour is rampant in the targeted areas, that could be seen as violation of children rights. Children are spotted in market place trading in cheap merchandise, begging and or serving as potters to the marketers. The increasing number of child headed households, leave many children vulnerable to abuse and exploitation as they miss out on opportunities to grow and develop in school based environment.
Women struggle to feed themselves and their families
Women struggle to feed themselves and their families in rural areas on the limited resources available to them. Their husbands have migrated to urban centres in search of job, while most available work is considered woman’s work in the community like tending to unproductive farms.
Moreover, most women have been widowed due to HIV & AIDS among other unfortunate cases. The effects of HIV & AIDS is being felt all over the community as it is along the busy Busia Kisumu highway frequented by the long distance truck drivers. The community does not have sustainable alternative source of income beside peasantry farming. There are no credit facilities that would enable women and families support themselves well.
