I will be teaching English for six months in Sri Lanka with the organisation PMGY. I have created this page to keep you up to date with fundraising goals etc. English teaching is very important in Sri Lanka, the main industries in Sri Lanka rely heavily on the ability to speak English. In order for their economy to develop they need to have a sound knowledge of international affairs, which is dominated by English speaking cultures. The program will include English teaching in three different places. I will be teaching in government schools. Although the schools are advanced for such a small country, the class sizes are around 40-60 which can be hard for just one teacher to handle. In conjunction the teachers available have a limited English speaking ability themselves. Most schools also finish early as many children need to work in the afternoons. Secondly I will be working in temples with monks of a variety of different ages. This will be a wonderful insight into a new culture for myself. Finally I will be working with a project set up by PMGY that helps villages that have been devastated by Tsunamis. This includes a variety of medical, conversational and teaching work. I hope you can see that this is a worthwhile cause and will be able to help me to achieve my goal of £2000 by August.
