Campaign Story
In many homes insulation is the most practical and cost-effective way to make a house more energy efficient, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter and saving up to 80% in heating and cooling losses. In addition, insulation may reduce condensation in the home.
The shacks found in the informal settlements of South Africa get extremely hot in the summer because they are iron structures that absorb and retain heat during the day. Extreme temperature rises in shacks have the potential to cause heat stress that will affect young children, adults and especially those suffering from epilepsy.
As majority of these homes do not have running water and electricity they are in dire need of protection against the harsh African sun in summer and damp and cold winters.
By insulating these homes properly, the environment inside these metal shacks become a lot more livable and sustainable.
Keeping the room temperatures steady, gas & wooden fires would not be necessary, which will also prevent accidental fires from starting and causing damage to property and loss of lives, due to the close proximity in which these houses are built.
Help us to kit these shacks with effective insulation, so they too can feel comfortable in their homes.
