THE SITUATION

► Thousands of young women in Kenya do not have access to sanitary products.

Girls are not educated in the subject of reproductive health and most do not know what happens to them every month.

Most girls skip school every month because they are ashamed to be seen with stained clothes and afraid of ridicule.

Women have to make difficult choices in order to get money for sanitary products (often leading to bigger complications such as infections and unwanted pregnancies).

WHAT WE WANT TO DO ABOUT IT

All women should have equal access to a safe and comfortable period.

Girls should believe they can go about their day at school or work without worrying about their period.

Menstrual cups are re-usable so no more worrying every month. They are also very durable and can be used for many years.

Menstrual cups will also help to reduce the enormous amount of waste that can be seen on the streets due to improper waste management in Kenya.

OUR GOAL

❤ We aim to distribute 100 menstrual cups on our next voluntary trip in Kenya (in January 2020) and teach girls how to use them and that their periods are a perfectly normal occurrence of their lives.

WHO WE ARE

Friends of Kenya Malta is a charitable NGO that aims to create awareness in Europe about the daily struggles of Kenyan people. As a voluntary organisation, we promote well-being for all ages and self-sufficiency in the villages we visit. You can see more information about our organisation on our Facebook page.

In January, a group of us will be visiting Kenya and our aim is to take with us 100 menstrual cups to distribute amongst the young girls and women. We will also help them understand female anatomy and their reproductive health, thus empowering them to be confident and help reduce the taboo surrounding this subject.
