Campaign Story
The Project aims at empowering LGBTI community in Uganda with skills that will enable them to defend their rights and interests in an organized manner. By re-energizing the LGBTI community. With your donation, we shall educate the stakeholders about LGBTI rights issues through community-based education and learning approach. Remobilize and rehabilitate LGBTI members in 20 solidarity groups established; collaborate with sister human rights organizations in Uganda and advocate the rights of LGBTI.
Ugandan LGBTI network is still young reorienting itself is faced with organized hate campaign by homophobic society, the government through legislation of draconian laws, Police harassment of homosexuals. This has threatened, hindered LGBTI's to come out to seek sex education that relates to their sexuality. With legal restriction, harassments, going underground and operating in hazard way; Poor organizational capacity staff are not properly empowered to manage ever increasing LGBTI challenges.
Solution
This aims to promote rights of sexual minorities at the community level, involve mobilizing and organizing LGBT individual into solidarity groups; Promoting, protecting rights of LGBT; HIV/AIDS prevention among LGBT community; Build capacity of LGBT individuals/groups in this volatile situation where both the state and society have conspired to make the operation of LGBTI network in Uganda difficult since homosexuality is still a crime in Uganda and communities observe the LGBTI as wrong people.
Long-Term Impact
With well-organized, well-coordinated LGBTI network which is fully aware of their rights and regularly meeting for purpose of enhancing their human rights knowledge/HIV/AIDS with efficient organized staff, the LGBTI community will be best positioned to effectively protect their rights on an informed basis and legally challenge any human rights violation in the country. The solidarity groups/committees re-organised and strengthened continuously functional even after the project period.
