Have you ever thought of how girls from underprivileged families manage their menses? Have you ever imagined the discomfort that they experience by using "other" alternative methods to absorb blood flow during their periods?
During our baseline survey conducted six months ago on factors affecting girl child education, it was very clear that lack of school fees, learning materials, school uniforms were not the only challenges girls from poor families faced. They had other challenges rarely discussed publicly.
This was lack of proper information on reproductive health, menstruation and menstrual hygiene and proper ways of managing their periods. Most of them reported that they used old rags, blankets, mattresses (unhygienic ways) etc which failed them in most cases as some of them soiled their school uniforms or even remained dormant in class while others played.
As an organization that advocates for hildren we have a responsibility to ensure that girls from such backgrounds have access to pads/sanitary towels and information on menstruation and menstrual hygiene. This will ensure that girls will grow up well informed on the changes take place in their bodies and how to take care of themselves. Above all they shall be able to stay in school throughout the term and have an equal opportunity to compete with their male counterparts. By so doing, we will reduce cases such as school dropouts, low self esteem, unwanted pregnancies and poor academic performance. Above all our girls will learn to appreciate the beauty of being a woman.
So far we have empowered over 1,400 girls from 5 different public primary schools ; which are as follows Heshima Primary school, Kaptembwa Primary School, Muslim Primary School,Rhonda Primary school and Koinange Primary school, We are looking at empowering over 6,000 needy girls by end of this year for those who are seating for their end exams and this will be possible through your continued support. with your support of $12 you empower 3 girls in one year and with you $1 you empower one girl we need $1 for each Girl of which we believe through you we can raise $6000 for 6000 girls
Together we stand to make it happen.
