Emma’s Medical Volunteer Trip to Rwanda

Who: Hello, my name is Yeonjoo Yu and I am a nursing student at the University of Washington. I am currently volunteering at a maternal clinic, Iranzi Clinic, where supports low income pregnant women and newborn babies in Rwanda.

Where: I mainly volunteer in the Community Based Prenatal & Postpartum program at a village called Nyabasindu. Experienced midwives and volunteers staff the program and provide free prenatal and postpartum exams for mothers and their newborns. Most of the staff are volunteers from Canada, Australia, the United States, Nigeria, and Korea. These households earn approximately $80 a month.

Why: As I have volunteered for almost five months since October, I have realized that there is insufficient infrastructure and medical equipment in the clinic. For example, I can hardly get accurate temperature of the babies because the thermometers are old. Same thing happens for measuring the weight and blood pressures.

Getting accurate vitals is simple yet important in assessing both the baby’s and mother’s healths. Since the clinic is ran by the funds donated from churches and individuals, these basic necessities in the clinic have not been fully resolved.

So I kindly ask you to donate for these beautiful mothers and babies and encourage them to regularly visit the clinic to learn more about their medical conditions.

What: I am planning to purchase 3 digital thermometers, 2 stethoscopes, 2 digital body weight scale, and 4 fully automated wrist blood pressure cuffs. I would also like to utilize the remaining budget to pay transportations.

왜: 작년 10월부터 5달간 봉사를 하면서 느낀것은, 이곳에는 의료장비와 시설이 매우 낙후되어 있다는 사실입니다. 예를 들자면, 저는 아기들의 체온계가 오래되고 오작동을 자주해서 체온을 잴때 정확한 숫자를 알수가 없습니다. 혈압을 재거나 몸무게를 잴때도 같은 상황이 벌어집니다.

정확한 숫자를 얻는것은 아기와 엄마의 건강 상태를 검진하기 위한 매우 간단하지만 중요한 사항입니다. 이 병원은 교회와 개인의 후원으로 운영되기 때문에, 이러한 간단한 문제 조차도 해결이 되고 있지 않습니다. 그리하여 이 아름다운 산모들과 신생아들을 후원해주시고 정기적으로 병원에 와서 검진을 받을수 있도록 후원해주시기를 부탁드립니다.
