A team of activists organized by Solidarity Rising is biking to raise funds for the refugees in the sahara desert.

The Sahrawi Red Crescent was created in 1975 along with the occupation of Western Sahara. For over 45 years the people of Western Sahara have been living in refugee camps, surviving on the bare minimum in one of the harshest areas of the Sahara desert. Studies by the World Food Program show that 1 out of 2 kids under the age of 5 and 3 out of 4 pregnant or lactating women suffer from anemia. 1 out of 3 Sahrawi kids suffer from chronic malnutrition. The Sahrawi Red Crescent provides basic nutritional products and food supplies to thousands of families every month but they don’t have enough funds to provide all families with their basic needs. They lack 20% of food items every month, for example they can only provide each person with 66 grams of fresh vegetables per day when the WFP’s recommendation is five times as much. The nearest big port or city from the refugee camps are 2000 kilometers away, making them vulnerable in case of disasters, especially since the emergency food stock barely covers 10% of the need.

This year Solidarity Riding will raise funds to help the Sahrawi Red Crescent cover its food distribution gaps. The funds will provide families with basic nutritional products such as high energy biscuits, lentils and oil as well as hygienic products, especially focusing on people with disabilities and illnesses whose needs the hospitals can’t afford to cover.

This year Solidarity Riding chooses to bike for two projects as a way to show that occupations, apartheid-systems and oppressive structures never are singular. Besides fundraising for the Sahrawi Red Crescent we will also fundraise for PCRF, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, who provides palestinan children and youth wth free medical treatment. The project that we will fundraise for is ”Solar power Gaza” that will help 55 families with chronically sick or disabled children who depend on medical devices like electric-powered respirators to stay alive.

As long as one place remains under occupation, no-one is free. We need to stand in solidarity with all oppressed people, hoping in the long-term to bring freedom to all the people of the world. In the meanwhile we need to support those that can’t take care of themselves and that suffer under the hands of violence. Click here if you also want to support PCRF's project in Gaza.
