Complete a Young Woman’s Gender Transition

Update posted by Eleanor Amaranth Lockhart On May 26, 2019

I've just received confirmation that - and I am incredibly lucky, far luckier than most trans people in this respect - my family is able and willing to pay the bulk of the surgical fees associated with my gender confirmation surgery and facial feminization surgery. I intend to schedule the surgery at the next available date.

So what does that leave? Unfortunately, a bit. My family can't provide much more than just the surgery fees. I'll itemize it here as best I can:

Coach/main cabin flight to either Guadelajara, Tijuana, or Bangkok (depending on negotiations with surgeons) on Delta Airlines: $1,200 (we're halfway to paying for this as of me writing this)

Possible hotel accomodations (provided if in Mexico for 10 days, but I will have to stay more than ten days; not provided if in Thailand): $500 ballpark estimate

Food & hygiene when not in the hospital: $1200

[note on the two above: if I confirm the Mexico surgery, the hotel cost will drop to near zero, but the food will go up]

Renting a cellphone local to the country (T-Mobile will cancel my plan if I use it while abroad for more than half a month): $155

Fees for X-rays, tests, etc. not covered by insurance in US: $300 (this may be an underestimate)

So based on this, I'm reducing the goal of the campaign to $3355. Which makes us much closer to our goal - but I need to be able to secure this, or the surgery doesn't happen - and for the reasons I've discussed in the campaign post, making this happen is probably the only way I'll feel safe and secure in the near future.

Sincerely,

Ellie

Dear all,

Thanks so much for your donations and promotion of this campaign. I'm humbled that we've gotten well over $100 in one evening, and all of you deserve thanks. Thanks to this, this site will show the campaign on its own promotional materials - so this helps.

I do want to assure everyone that I'm being upfront about where the money is going and the costs. I maintain a separate debit account from my everyday one for transition expenses, and will be moving money received to that account to savings until such time as surgery needs to be paid for and travel arrangements made.

The $30,000 figure is a ballpark - the cost will not be more than that. I have an estimate from a surgeon who is reputable and meets my criteria that places the cost with travel very near $30,000. In the event that I choose a cheaper surgeon, I will reduce the campaign goal. I think it's unlikely we will approach even $20,000 - which is below the bare minimum to make this happen - before I have selected a surgeon.

Once I've selected a surgeon, I'll assemble an itemized list of medical and travel costs. None of this money will be diverted to other purposes. Integrity is important to me, so I felt I needed to be clear on that.

Most sincerely and gratefully,

Ellie
