Kenya held its general elections last month on 8th of August 2017. The election results were contested but unlike in 2007 when it resulted into violence that caused over 1000 deaths and over half a million displaced, the opposition opted to petition the supreme court.
The supreme court invalidated the results and ordered for a repeat of the elections in 60 days. The ruling marked the first time in Africa that a court has nullified the re-election of a sitting leader. "The presidential election was not conducted in accordance with the constitution, rendering the declared results invalid, null and void," Chief Justice David Maraga said.
The electoral commission has set Oct 26 2017 as the date for the new elections. Kenya remain a polarized state. While the opposition leader hailed the supreme court, the president castigated them. The Observers didn't help as they had cleared the results as free and fair and called on the opposition to concede. Kenya is divided in the middle with a lot of "fake" news aka propagada on social media. It is not possible to tell who is telling the truth - that includes the presidents party, opposition, the electoral commission, observers.
Therefore, there is a need for an independent, impartial voice amidst the noise. I am developing a cloud based app that will allow people from all 40,000 plus polling stations in Kenya to report on the results as they are announced in real time. In so doing, we'll be able to provide figures that can be compared to what the electoral commission announces. With your support, we can ensure the repeat elections is not only fair but the will of the people is known to the world and respected.
