I am a 67-year-old female trying to survive on a fixed income that is too small to have an apartment or home of my own… even reduced-rate senior housing is too expensive once electric, phone, food, medicine, insurance and transportation costs are added in. I am one of those people who has “fallen through the crack” because my income is just a little over the limits for Medicaid, food stamps or housing assistance. As such, I am forced to live with my 87-year-old mother and her husband. This has not been ideal and is causing stress for everyone concerned.

About five years ago, I began to wonder where I would live once my mother passes away. After much thought and research, I found a solution: I would purchase a camper and live in it full-time! The goal of acquiring a camper has been in the forefront of my mind for many years, now. I’ve spent the past year paying off old bills so I would have my entire retirement check to live on once I had the camper. Despite this effort, my credit is still not good enough to get a loan and my family is unable to help.

Although I have been unable to save enough money to purchase an actual “camper”, I did find a 1986 Chevy Conversion Van needing only cosmetic improvements for $2,200.00. The engine is in great condition because the owner’s son is a mechanic. I managed to pull together $500.00 for a non-refundable down-payment on this van, but am struggling to get the remaining $1,700 to complete the purchase by September 3rd, 2018. I have only 20 days to get the necessary funds.

Thus far, in an effort to get the remaining cash, I am:

  • Driving many hours every day for Lyft (like Uber);
  • Looking for a “regular” job;
  • Selling my beloved Singer Quantum 9960;
  • Selling my beloved Bernina Serger;
  • Selling all remaining sewing & crocheting supplies and tools;
  • Selling many articles of clothing;
  • Selling the few furnishings I have that won’t be useful in a van; and
  • Requesting financial help from YOU, the general public.

I need $1,700.00 by September 3rd and any donation amount will be greatly appreciated. If you love camping, or know an elderly person trying to survive on a small fixed income, please consider contributing a few dollars.
