Edventure International is an organization that combines leadership and volunteerism to help local communities in Thailand, Costa Rica, Cambodia and South Africa. I will be involved in a 3-week volunteer initiative in South Africa in the month of August. This program will combine teaching with building, among other things: We will spend time empowering local communities by providing essential education. Many of the children we work with are without parents, either from losing a parent to AIDs, drugs or just being abandoned entirely. A lack of social welfare available to many of these communities along with access to free education and simple health care creates a need that we can wholeheartedly fulfill. In some rural schools there is a distinct lack of opportunities for rural learners to take part physical education or sports. This could be for many reasons; the families cannot afford to buy the equipment, or there is not transportation to bring the kids to any sports activities. By providing organization and structure to sports and physical activities, many young kids will have an opportunity to play in team sports where they otherwise would not. Our goal in South Africa is to impact rural communities that have a significant need for a greater quality of life. We do this by producing community development projects that positively support and improve the socioeconomic development of a community through infrastructure, health, or educational projects. This could include becoming involved in local initiatives to increase the economy and establish co-ops in local communities; for example, promoting and supporting local businesses that make a variety of products out of bamboo, or other local home-grown resources. We will be involved in a range of opportunities to make an impact in rural communities, including coaching sports, providing medical assistance and awareness, assistance in childcare, and spreading environmental awareness. All of the programs and assistance we provide through Edventure is funded by the volunteers themselves, from healthcare supplies to building materials. Any contribution that you are able to make, regardless of size, will help enable us to improve the quality of life of children and families in South African villages. I thank you in advance for your support in this endeavour.
