Hong Kong is commonly known as a cosmopolitan city. Nevertheless, the gap between the rich and the poor has much widened in this decade. According to the Hong Kong Poverty Situation in 2017, more than 1.3 million residents lived below the poverty line. This indicates that one in five Hongkongers is living below the line. Worse still, child poverty in Hong Kong is an alarming issue. For over 220,000 children who are living under the poverty line, they do not have an equal chance of formal education. Extracurricular pursuits are becoming an inaccessible luxury for them due to financial constraints.
Being a local English teacher who teaches students mainly from low-income groups for 5 years, I truly understand the hardship these kids have been suffering in their childhood. With little support from the government, these children are unable to take part in after-school tutoring, extracurricular activities or interest classes. They have insufficient funds to purchase additional learning tools including dictionaries and E-books. A lack of access to these resources could immersely curb learning and development. Poverty has also proven to have profoundly negative implications for children when it comes to their physical and mental health, social life and learning. In fact, education is a crucial stepping stone out of poverty. With your donation, more than hundreds of impoverished children can receive (i) scholarships, (ii) supplementary learning tools and (iii) financial support. Your donation can help relieve their families burden, which is a very effective means in tackling intergenerational poverty. Please give a hand to our Hong Kong children. Thank you very much!
