Education for the future

St Columba Anglican Church - Gugulethu, is a parish that services a community in the lowest hierarchy of the Living Standard Measure (LSM) and most of the parishioners come from the informal settlements in the Gugulethu location.

In August 2014, a 10 year old girl was murdered and found under her grandfather's bed and on following the story we discovered that the mother had no alternative as she returned home after 6pm and didn't want the child to be on her own between 3 - 6pm. This situation motivated the church to earnestly look at raising funds to build a hall that could be used as an after-care centre for the children in the area. We were encouraged by our current Archbishop to add on a creche that will offer the same level of early childhood development for the children who cannot afford to go to the well-equipped pre-schools. This project will also create job opportunities for the community to alleviate poverty in the area.

We are all aware of the state of education in South Africa and especially in the locations. This is our opportunity to assist the community to produce well equipped Grade R children to join the formal schooling whilst at the same time we nurture those who are already at school by assisting them with homework and opening their minds to further possibilities as far as the options they have to develop themselves for tertiary or work life.

The estimated cost of the project is R5,9 million as of calculations done by the Architect and Quantity Surveyor. The church has already fund raised R200000,00 towards the project.
