Educaton for Nepal

What’s the story of the project?

The direct contact with the Chuchepati camp during my travelings in Nepal allowed me to witness the consequences of the earthquake in April 2015 and the great impact it still has on the life of too many people. Chuchepati camp is an earthquake displacement camp in Kathmandu with more than 400 families from different affected districts, living in dire conditions, with limited access to sanitation services, clean water and food, and health services. I found that the worst part of life on these places is the lack of perspective for most people (and especially children) due to very basic education and thus few job opportunities for the future. Here my personal videos and interviews from the camp:

What is the idea?

My experiences in the camp brought me to the idea of this project. With your help, I want to deliver support for the education in the Chuchepati camp and other affected areas. Find the campaign also on Facebook: www.facebook.com/EducationforNepalProject. The project is separated in two parts:

The first part of the project concentrates on supporting the tent school in Chuchepati camp. My visits in the camp allowed me to realize and organize in the best way the support of the school. The money will be used for all materials which are missing right now to allow a flawless teaching process and would motivate more people to join the school. Also, the teachers' salary will be secured over the next months. More detailed information below. Moreover, I want to create a direct connection and communication between the people in need and those of us willing to support them. You can find your personal connectiona and impression through the photos, videos and interviews that I made personally during my multiple visits in the camp. In addition to the money raising, I will organize an immaterial support for the Chuchepati camp. It means that your letters, photos, video or audio messages will be sent to those people and shown on a whiteboard in the camp so that the Nepalis there can see the faces of their helpers and feel their attention and emotional support. You can send me your message in any form either personally or via email: [email protected] . Their response will be amazing, believe me! :)

As a second, the raised money will support two bigger projects of rebuilding primary schools in other highly affected areas, led by the NGO “Hugging Nepal”. The organization has built and maintained the school in the Chuchepati camp and is therefore responsible for the existence of education in the camp at all. Find detailed information about the NGO and the projects below and get your personal impression at https://www.facebook.com/huggingnepal/.
or through my personal interview with Ali from "Hugging Nepal": https://youtu.be/z982IJb4ZxI

Detailed project information

PART 1: Chuchepati camp

Why Chuchepati camp?

I came across this camp over Swekshya. I met her on coincidence on my first day in Nepal (more about our first meeting you can read on my blog – https://neventrip.wordpress.com/2015/10/31/step-5-the-long-way-to-a-new-horizon/ ). Since her house got destroyed, she has been living with her mother and aunt in a tent in the Chuchepati camp for the last seven months, where she teaches English to women. Swekshya showed me around and gave me some internal information about the camp, what the main issues there are and what the people there really need. I want to break the image of the foreigners as walking wallets and money givers by showing them that we care. Make your own impression by watching my video about the Chuchepati camp here:
https://youtu.be/AQOoQ0ujbnQ

Also, the traveler Andy Lambert has written a great blog posts about the Chuchepati camp showing some impressive photography and addressing the education issues there: https://lambolens.wordpress.com/2015/09/25/chuchepati-idp-camp-displaced-and-disregarded/ . Good photography report of the camp can be found here: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/view-of-the-chuchepati-displacement-camp-from-a-nearby-news-photo/483811780

Who will take care of the proper use of the funds?

Because I’m back from Nepal now, a trustful person on site is the only way to make sure that the funds will be distributed properly. During my two months in Nepal I got to know Swekshya very well. She is one of these people who will take care of the people around her before thinking of herself. Her caring behavior and great positive attitude, despite the tough life conditions, stunned me and she gained my respect and my trust. She will take care also that our messages will be received by the people in the camp and she can return us their messages. I want to break the image of the foreigners as walking wallets and money givers by showing them that we care. This interview with her in her temp will help you to get to know Swekshya ersonally:
https://youtu.be/aKSb7-3MPhs

There is another person that will support Swekshya and help her organize the spending of the funds is Prashant, a cosine of a friend of mine in Germany. We met in Kathmandu and became good friends. I spent most of my time in Kathmandu with him and his family as described in a post of my blog: https://neventrip.wordpress.com/2015/11/16/step-7-becoming-a-friend-of-nepal/ . He, as well, gained my trust completely. He will receive the funds for the camp and help Swekshya buying the materials.

The strong connections, I established in Nepal, will not only assure the accurate and successful distribution of the funds but will also allow a direct return communication about the short and long term impact of the support. I'll keep you updated on all news and responses (videos, photos, messages) from Nepal.

On what will the money be spent?

Together with Swekshya, I discussed and listed all the required materials which are missing right now to allow a flawless teaching process and would motivate more people to join the school. This includes dictionaries, notebooks, writing materials, a new white board, school books, a box for protecting the materials etc. Also, the teacher salary of Swekshya (50€/month), which is paid by “Hugging Nepal” but cannot be secured over the next months, will be financed by the raised funds over a period of six months. The sum, required to cover these needs, is estimated to 600€.

PART 2: Rebuilding schools with “Hugging Nepal”

Who is “Hugging Nepal”?

“Hugging Nepal” is a Spanish NGO which has been supporting earthquake relief and various rebuilding projects since the earthquake in April 2015.The NGO was recommended to me by Swekshya and many volunteers as very transparent and engaged. I visited Maria and Ali from “Hugging Nepal” where I got detailed information about their two current projects about rebuilding schools in the earthquake affected areas. The project development was very well planned and involves the local community in the rebuilding process. Moreover, “Hugging Nepal” has developed a plan about involving locals to assure the successful school usage in the years after the reconstruction. The detailed project description for the schools is translated from Spanish to English now and will be available until the end of the year. Me and Ali talk about "Hugging Nepal" and its projects in this video:

https://youtu.be/z982IJb4ZxI

How will the money be used?

Since our support for the projects will be only one small part of them, the exact allocation of the funds in the two projects will be decided by “Hugging Nepal”, depending on the current demand. I will get feedback and invoices about the spent money from the NGO to assure the right distribution.

What amount is expected as donation?

Of course every single donation brings us one step further. Just keep in mind that your money is so much more worth for the people in Nepal so by donating you actually create additional value for your money. Even the amount equal to the meals for one day in your country means so much for the people sleeping in tents. Regarding Christmas coming soon and the related shopping boom, consider how much more a present for those people without future will be worth.
