When we were small we remember the joy and excitement of going to the shops to buy new books, stationary, school bags for the new school year. We have been privileged to get a good education and reach great strides in life. Unfortunately, many children do not get that opportunity. Millions of families are unable to meet the cost of books, uniforms, and other school supplies resulting in their children dropping out of school.
We have been donating books and school supplies to students from Thalawa and Siyambalaanduwa villages, Sri Lanka in December each year with the goal of helping children from less fortunate families who are struggling to get an education. Most of these children come from low-income, multi-ethnic families who are limited by a household income less than $200 per month.
Last year was the first time we used social media to raise funds. Thanks to many kind and caring friends we were able to raise $1,225. Further, we received offline donations and discounts on purchases from numerous other donors. We have also set up a small fund that generates about $600 per year. All of these streams produced a total of $8500 for 2017. All of the funds were used to purchase school items and we were able to donate to 319 children in 2017.
As you can imagine, the children we can reach through this effort is a small fraction of those that are in need. Education is an invaluable gift and the pathway to poverty alleviation. Therefore, we would like to invite you to join us in this endeavour. Not only will your donation help a less-fortunate child to stay in school, but you will also contribute towards a brighter future. Donations can be made through Paypal or Stripe debit.
