Despite its reserves of oil, South Sudan is one of the least developed nations in the world and faces a "growing humanitarian crisis" amid ongoing conflict, food shortages and reports of ethnic cleansing and rapes.

Situation Update:

South Sudan has been an independent country for more than five years. December 2016 marked three years of brutal conflict devastating communities throughout South Sudan. According to OCHA, some 2.7 million people have been forced to leave their homes, looking for safety in other towns, other countries or in the protection of UN camps.

Famine:

4.7 million individuals – many of them children – are currently facing severe food insecurity across the country. With some parts of the country already experiencing famine, this is the highest level of hunger and malnutrition experienced in South Sudan since the conflict began. The risk of starvation and death is real for many children and families. 5.5 million people (over half the population) could be hungry in July 2017 if we don’t act.

We can’t stand by and watch this unfold in front of our eyes when we know more can be done. The most vulnerable are children. Those with the power and leverage to change the situation must not allow the lives of the children of South Sudan to suffer at the expense of politics and self-interest.

Many Schools Are Shut Or Destroyed:

Many schools have either been closed by the government or occupied and damaged by internally displaced people or armed groups. More than 800 schools were destroyed between December 2013 and August 2015, when the latest peace deal was signed.

More than 6,000 schools remain operable, but they all lack resources.

"Most of the schools have very poor facilities and anywhere else, they wouldn't even be called schools," Nguyen said. "It's basically a tree and a blackboard."

In South Sudan, only 27 percent of adults can read. In many cases, teachers aren't much older than their students. Nguyen said about 37 percent of teachers have actual teaching certification. An equal percentage have only attained the equivalent of an 8th grade education. The rest have either unchecked or unconfirmed teaching qualifications.

Please donate today to help us build a school and educate the children of South Sudan.

Together we can do it!
