Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read our story. This is our plan on how to help the community in Uroa, whilst introducing a sustainable method to the plastic crisis that has been introduced to this beautiful island.
We are a group of friends who have seen the impact plastic has had on Uroa. We have joined together to work out a sustainable way to help clean up Nungwi and educate the community on the environment.
Our primary goal is to collect plastic bottles along with single-use plastic, and educate the community on how to reuse it. Hotels and tourists produce a high volume of plastic, which currently is often burned, buried, dumped or discarded in the sea. We plan on working alongside the hotels and local businesses to teach the staff about the environment, as well as offering a service to collect their used plastic. Following our research in to methods of recycling plastic, we concluded “Ecobricks” provided an effective and sustainable solution, with the concept already proven in other countries, such as the Philippines.
Ecobricks are plastic bottles filled with single-use plastic, that when packed to certain specifications, can be used to create practical things such as furniture, fences and even buildings! As well as working with hotels and local businesses, we plan on providing education to the local community to demonstrate that plastic can and should be reused.
The donations we can gain will enable us to start our project which will facilitate change. Rashid is donating his land to the cause, where donations will allow us to employ and empower local women to make the Ecobricks. This will ensure they are made to the correct specifications, whilst providing opportunity and empowerment to the local women.
We care about Uroa, Zanzibar and our planet, and we are passionate and ready to help with your support.
